Scout Armor Question

By sovereign3, in Deathwatch

Hello Everyone,

Finally got the Deathwatch core rule book and have been gleefully working on a campaign to run (drawing inspiration from the great syfy show Warehouse 13). One of my players wants to play as a Space Wolf Scout, so he is going to play as a Tactical Marine with Scout Armor.

Here’s the problem: the requisition cost for scout armor is listed as N/A. Does this mean you can’t have it or does it mean you can just switch out your Power Armor for Scout Armor?

Thank you in advance

I don't have the book yet myself, but I would assume that to mean that players may freely requisition scout armor no matter what his renown. If they issue it to initiates, then it must not be that difficult to come by, being mainly a higher-class of carapace armor.

It means you can get it whenever you want without requisition points, yes.

The way I read it is that they can swap it for free if they wish. One thing to remind your player is that they wouldn't be a true scout as they have undergone the full transformation to astartes. But a background as being a scout sergeant or recruiting master of the scout company would be nice. You may also want to ensure the player realises the benefits and drawbacks and as a GM remember the drawbacks of powerarmour so the scout can really feel the benefit.

Unless you are a Space Wolf, they are the most able veterans

Thanks everyone for the quick replay, it helps alot:)

One annoying thing though, is that the unlisted req price makes it difficult to determine if "master" quality scout armour exists.

I would like to be able to offer some amount of variety, especially as the players advance. As far as armour goes, its pretty much PA->Artificer/Termie (depending on mission req/talents to get artificer)

Yes it does excist, just fudge the cost, make it...say Requisition 20, Renown Respected...
Can't have it straight of the bat but resonably quick and as signature wargear

I was probably going to give it no cost, just apply the base renown reqs in order to get the improved quality.

This of course, also begs the question of if "master" quality PA is available (or is that another name for artificer armour).

Mechanically, they are not the same (varying AP, artificer armour has 2 histories, etc.), but fluff wise, artificer armour is practically the definition of what "masterwork" is supposed to be.

Remember that as written, scout armour only covers the body and arms. If your player is going to be wearing Scout armour instead of PA all the time then I'd modify it a bit so that it protects the legs as well. Either that or give him a ton of extra fate points cos he's gonna need them.

Space Wolf scouts are Blood Claws and operate in full Power Armour instead of Scout Armour

I've always read it as N/A req items just being there so that players have the stats for the item.

Space Wolves Initiates are Blood Claws. In a Codex Chapter, the Initiates are first trained as Scouts.

Space Wolves can become Scouts once they have shown they can master the beast within and their impulse... this is reflected in the TT game by them being an Elite Choice (where Codex Scout and Bloodclaw are Troops).

Hmm, learn something new everyday

I dont think I've ever seen a Space Wolf player take scouts in 15 of tabletop

Actually Space Wolf Scouts are usually those who don't fit in well with a pack, at any point in their life. A Blood Claw who shows that he can't fit in well with his pack....more often though it is usually as a Grey Hunter when the Space Wolf is given reign to become a Scout, but again it is due to his inability to fit in with his pack.
