CanGames 2009

By Tashiro, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

CanGames is coming once again to Ottawa, Canada, and I'm thinking of running Descent once more. I ran it exclusively for three days in 2006, and it was really fun (I saw about three people wander off with Descent after... :D I'm proud!)

The thing is, the 2009 theme is 'wolves at the door'. I'm trying to think of how to do this for Descent. I'd probably do this as a self-designed adventure, but besides Beastmen and Hellhounds, what else should I do?

Ignore the theme? After all... there could be other things once they pass through the door... like Descent!

Just make sure you have Tomb of Ice, as one of the Heros rides a wolf.

Problem solved.

Ah! so you're comming back! You didn't show up for Cangames 2007/2008 so I was wondering where you went. As for the Wolves at the gate theme, Beastmen, Hellhounds, Wendigos galore would work well enough (With a touch of Kobolds in the mix happy.gif ). An idea for an adventure could be a literal "Wolves At The Gate" scenero using road to legend outdoor tiles, the PC's fighting to defend a village with the mission of killing a boss monster before the village is overwelmed and destroyed or the getting killed in the process. A Wolf lair assult. In the end I'm sure you'll do a good job with it.

Glad to hear you're considering making a comeback. I'm an excellent fan of Descent and since playing it I've bought the game and all the expansions. Of course now I'm way overloaded so I don't see myself getting another expansion if any. I need two sizeable tool boxes to hold all the parts in (one for the stuff, one for the monsters) and even then I can just barely meet the squeeze into the boxes. Boy there is a lot of parts! Looking forward to seeing you at Cangames so good luck in the planning process.

don't forget about Furr the Spirit WOLF ;-)

Actually, I was at the last CanGames, but I wasn't able to run Descent, since I was busy helping man the Fool's Moon booth. I have to promote my company as well sometimes. ;) But yeah, I'm looking forward to running Descent again, and my wife may be running Grimm.

All good advice. I need to get the latest expansion as well. I wish the Descent builder was up to date, though. It would make my job so much easier. : Ah well. Make due with what I have, I guess. :)

The outdoor idea is good,

Something that comes to mind with that is you can have a gate at one end of the area, represented by like two encounter marks, and run it in rounds, like a defense game. Each round the monsters get tougher, ie. round one white Kobolds, Round two Red Kobolds, Round three white Hell hounds etc.

and every wolf like bad guy the OL manages to get onto those squares the Heroes lose a conquest token, based on the type (white kobold lose one point)

Heroes gain points by killing nasty badguys, maybe rescuing kidnapped villagers, not letting any of a wave through etc.

They are real close to the villiage so they can resupply easy.

Say the kidnapped villagers are linked to store, you start out with only one dude capable of maning a store, but the next guy you rescue is in charge of a store filled with Bronze loot, the second is a traveling merchant with a stash of Silver, and the third is the Mayor who has a vault filled with magical artifacts (ie Gold loot)

I am going to try and run a Descent Tourny of some sort here at CalCon here in Calgary, so these things go over well do they?

With the ToI Set there also came a tile that connected to out doors to the dungen so you could use that as part of quest . Have some hounds and beast men at the opening (gate) and end it with the 10 by 10 tile as the main part to the lair.

? are you use all parts of Descent like RtL. kind of like a sample plate. If so the end boss could be a LT maybe copper lv.

I see a boss monster with multiple Furr's as minions. Multiple Ghost wolves with armor ignoring attacks. demonio.gif (or armor is instead the number of dice you have in your Magic trait, a la Nanok)

What are the logistics of a Descent tourney, such as the one that will be held at the Cangames? That sounds interesting...I may have to come. How exactly does it work?

Well, it really depends on how you want to do it. You could do it as a contest, getting the names of each group, and keeping track of how many Conquest Tokens they have at the end of the adventure, or you could give each individual their own conquest tokens, and the person with the highest amount at the end 'wins'.

Alternatively, and I've done this before -- you do a PvP event, where each player gets Overlord Cards, the ability to gather Threat, and have Conquest Tokens to represent their 'survivability'. I've done this, acting as the neutral arbiter of the rules, and it worked surprisingly well. Even allowed them to spawn monsters, with the rule: You can control any monster which can not see you. If the monster sees you, you can not control it, but other players can (presuming the monster can't see them).

The PvP event played out very well, in fact.
