Alternate Origin xp cost and Rank

By nikink, in Rogue Trader

Hi all,

If this has been asked before, sorry. I couldn't find it.

My question is, some of the Alternate Origins from Into the Storm cost xp, so does this xp count towards the characters Rank in the same manner as the 500 starting XP?

I would think that it does, but I've been informed it doesn't. As I don't have the book until at least next week, could someone answer this for me? Please? :)

The xp cost for the alternate origin choices comes out of the 1,000 xp that you spend after going through the origin chart.. So it is added in for total xp spent and reduces the bonus stuff you get after you go through the origin path chart. Says so at the start of the section of alternate origin options. The only exception is that the world choices don't cost xp and so don't come out of your starting xp.

1,000 xp ?! Isn't it only 500 ?

Ah. Yep. Guess I read over that section too fast. Double checked and it says 500.

Yes and no.

Yes, in the sense that the costs of those options are taken out of your starting XP like any other advance.

No, in the sense that the starting 500xp is already included in your starting rank whatever you spend it on - the Origin Path is 'worth' 4,500xp, with 500xp to spend on top to bring you up to 5,000, at which point, you're at the start of Rank 1.

However, if you start the game with extra XP because the GM says that you can, no, any of that additional XP spent on the Alternate Origins wouldn't count for XP spent in terms of going up in ranks, and that is stated in the pages of rules before the Alternate Origins are given.

Thanks everyone.

Millandson, how does your point work?

GM says everyone can have 800 xp to choose their Origins and make their characters.

They all start at 4500xp, they spend 800 on Origins, are they now not 5300xp?

Since the extra exp doesn't count towards Rank 1, Rank 0 is increased. So if they have 800xp in the Origin Path, they had 4200xp already spent, or Rank 1 requires 5300xp to take it.

I'm just breaking this rule and saying that origin spent xp counts towards rank1 and comes from that first 500. Main reason is I want everyone on the same rank, and there really aren't a lot of good options rank1 anyway since half of it is given by taking the career. I find most players spend rank1 exp on attributes, so at that point why not let them count their epic origin if thats what they want. I guess I don't see the harm in this.

I agree completely. XP is XP, and total XP spent - no matter what it's spent on - determines Rank.
