In the original Chaosium game, groups of investigators could "gang up" on critters/gates... For instance, if a Gate appeared in the Black Cave, several investigators could help close it - all at the same time, in the same location as the Gate; or, if a Cthonian began wandering Arkham's streets, a group of stalwart investigators could try to destroy it - the monster & the investigators - all in the same (combat) space.

Can this still be done or is it just one investigator per monster/gate at a time?

In general, investigators can't cooperate. The best they can do is trade equipment, or sometimes one investigator can kill a monster so another investigator doesn't have to deal with it.
