Question about "BLAST" attack

By solarw, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

i whould like someone to explain me exactly what is happening with a blast attack when a hero use it.

I am new to the game and the reason i am making this question is that when we started playing i picked a card with blast attack(from a treasure) and if i didnt miss my attack i was killing almost all mobs near me with 1 attack(and with my basic abilitys i had it almost always lvl3 so it had a bif range to kill almost all), so i think i dont know how to use correct this ability

I am new to the game so if someone can help me plz do it because me and my friends realized that if we pick a blast card we just win the game.

Yes, that's pretty much what happens with a Blast rune. I assume you were using Mad Carthos or Landrec the Wise as a character - those two were made for Blast-runing.

Here's a basic rundown: You declare your attack on a space, as normal. Then you verify line-of-sight and roll the dice. Count your range to be sure you made it to the target square. Then count your damage and add surges to either increase the Blast radius or add damage, depending on your rune.

Blast runes are very useful and, yes, they are used to clear a room of weaker monsters. A smart Overlord will quickly learn two things:

1. Kill the mage with the blast rune.

2. If you can't do #1 then spread your monsters out so that some of them will survive.

Also bear in mind that the Blast damage includes friendly figures. It's fairly common that you'll be hitting your own melee friends and sometimes even yourself.

Blast attacks can be very powerful - against weaker monsters. However most blast attacks do not allow additional damage beyond what the dice rolled (ie surges are usually unable to be spent on extra damage, only extra blast radius) and that can make them weak against very powerful monsters. A hero with a good Blast weapon that he can use well is just another thing for the OL to factor into his strategy and playstyle. It is not an automatic win the game effect!

Step 1 Hero declares an attack targeting a space (not a figure) which may or not contain an enemy figure. Basic Rules Pg 9

Note that the attacking player designates a space to attack and not necessarily another figure. This is important for weapons with the Blast ability.

Step 2 Confirm LOS from hero to target space

Step 3 Roll the dice.

Step 4 confirm range (possibly spending surges or special abilities to add range) from hero to target space was achieved and there were no X's indicating a miss

Step 4 calculate damage and spend surges (on damage/range/extra blast/other affects, as allowed by weapon)

Step 5 for a blast weapon, apply the Total Damage to all figures, friend or foe (include the hero doing the attack), within the blast radius. Blast radius is the target square + every square within Z of the target square (where Z is final Blast rank after surges have been spent). Squares which are blocked from the target square by walls, closed doors or obstacles are not hit by the blast (use LOS rules to check)

The Blast attack deals its full damage to each figure affected by it (friendly and enemy). Pg 22

Step 5a apply all said damage to each figure as Total Damage (see bottom of page 10)

Step 6 each figure hit by the blast subtracts armour and other special effects from Total Damage to find its own individual actual damage (see top of page 11) and removes that many wound tokens (for a hero) or adds that many wound tokens (for a monster). Special effects may be applied again (such as Ghost Armour, etc).

Step 7 remove (or roll for undying) any dead figures.

Additional notes.

Dodge: Any figure hit by the blast may dodge (if a dodge card is played for the monster or a hero has a dodge order already) and the rerolled dice apply for the entire attack (ie the rerolled dice are applied to all the figures hit by the blast instead of the original dice). Only one dodge applies to the blast even is more than one hero has a dodge order etc.

Shadowcloak: The origin of the Blast is still the attacker, so to hit a figure with Shadowcloak the attacker must be adjacent to the figure regardless of where the blast targets. (This makes it dificult, but not impossible, to hit shadowcloaked figures without getting caught caught in one's own blast!)

Soar: Blast attacks ignore Soar effects and hit soaring monsters normally. Give your old Blast treasures to your Melee heroes for backup in outdoor encounters.

Large Monsters: Large monsters may have several spaces that they cover affected by the Blast. However they are still only hit once by the blast attack. So if you are doing 5 Damage Blast 3 and hitting all four spaces of an Ogre with Armour 4 (I don't recall exact armour of Ogre, this is just example) you will do 1 wound (6-5) to the Ogre. Not 4 (4x 6-5), not 16 (4x5 -4), just 1. So blast is not very powerful against tough monsters.

The Blast attack deals its full damage to each figure affected by it (friendly and enemy). Pg 22

In short, Blast is very nice at sweeping out the minor monsters, but weak when you come up against something major.

Thanks a lot for the help and the fast response, everething is clear now :)
