How many Inquisitors are there in the Calixis sector?

By player156413, in Dark Heresy

Kinda basic question, i know, but I cant fins this anywhere in the books...

How big is the Ordos Calixis? I have heard every answer from a couple of dozen up to a couple of thousand Inquisitors. All the arguments are logical, but i was just wondering if something concrete had been given? How many Inquisitor Lords, how many Inquisitors, how many non-Inquisitor Throne agents? What about the background staff that run the Tricorn Palace and the other holdings dotted about the sector?

What do people think? What have other GM's said already?

Yes, hence the "200 known" part. happy.gif I probably should have emphasized that in my post. sonrojado.gif

Which brings up the question, how many planets are in the Calixis sector? I know there are something like just under 200 named planets, but was a total planet population ever released, or is that supposed to be it?

One Inquisitor per planet seems a bit much - I'd go for something like 1 per 10 planets. It keeps them from being common and gives each Inquisitor more space to work in without stepping on one another's toes.

True. But the Calixis Sector has long been known to have an unusually high number of Inquisitors. Something about how the sector draws them like moths to a flame. Not all of them are active at the same time. And as Brother Praetus said, some of them are missing or dead. I also imagine some of them have moved on to other areas, like the Koronus Expanse, or joined the Crusade in Jericho. And the Inquisition in Calixis is very unorganized compared to some areas - the neighboring Scarus Sector, for example.

So, it's not as cramped as it seems at first glance.

Also, the Holy Ordos are notorious for working their own projects, investigating along side (but not with) fellow Inquisitors, and even investigating against fellow Inquisitors. So 1 Inquisitor for each Planet may, in practice be 10 or so Inquisitors to a single world (like Scintilla) and yet none to several planets, as well as vice versa.

The Inquisitors go wherever there is problems, not sit around and deal with problems when they arise, which is both a good thing and bad, for it means they crack down on big things, but miss the small threats which rot and then become big and get out of hand...

I've been compiling a list from all the DH books to date and it's up to about 206 probably still active and about 5 known or thought dead.

I find it odd that one Inquisitor per planet seems common to some people. It's like saying there's one Queen of England, so Queens of England are common, you can barely move for tripping over one.

While true, between the pdf, the Arbites, various acolyte groups, and the Church, the average planet should not often need the very specialized skills or direct intervention of an Inquisitor.

Besides which, storytelling wise, the presence of more Inquisitors makes their appearance less impactful upon a story.

Okay, I'll grant you that ... perhaps. But that depends on the story, and when, or more importantly if, those Inquisitors actually make an appearance in the story. Just because they might happen to be in the area, doesn't mean they have to make an appearance in the story. And even if they do, that doesn't mean that your players have to know who they really are.

I do see your point, but ... I guess I just don't see it as much of a problem. If you think it's too many, it's not hard to wipe out a few dozen (or more), in any number of ways ... handwaving being the easiest. gui%C3%B1o.gif

While I agree to many inquisitors can be a problem. One thing to remember is that they are a secretive and untrustworthy lot so 200 in a sector means they may not ever meet in a hundred years. The main thing to remember is how much of a threat are the people you are dealing with to the imperium. There are examples where as many as 30 inquisitors have gathered together to discuss potential threats to the imperium; although meetings like these are extremely rare, normally involving a threat that could bring down a sector or more if not dealt with. As per the one Inquisitor to a planet rule I think even that may be a bit high, most worlds have no need for an inquisitor. That being said some hive worlds have offical Inquistor headquarters in the capital of the planet. The headquarters sometimes have as any as a dozen Inquisitors working within. The problem with the inquisition is how secretive they are there could be 1000 inquisitors in the Calixis secotor; or 100 of the official 200 are simply paper trails then when followed prove to not even be real.

If we assume 1 inquisitor per planet, what does that mean for the ratio of people: inquisitors ?

Trillions of people per inquisitor or tens of trillions ?

Well, that's hard to say without knowing the population of the sector at any given time. But I'd say, at the very least, hundreds of Billions per Inquisitor ... and probably closer to Trillions per Inquisitor. Considering the large number of hive worlds, tens of Trillions wouldn't be too far-fetched, either.

200 planets referenced in the books but there are countless more to be created. there are thousands of solar system with worlds with each a moons etc...

Yeah they are very likely not evenly distributed between planets and solar systems. Inquisitors go where their agendas take them - sometimes even to foil some other Inquisitor's agenda gui%C3%B1o.gif

Also consider visibility. A dozen or so are probably occupied by administrative tasks (Tricorn Palace and elsewhere) on major hive worlds. Others are undercover. Others are busy cleaning up their mess for political reasons - the kind Ravenor dodged to chase his nemesis and which are described as taking months and years. Others are on warp travel which can take weeks and thus take longer than actual investigation on-site. Others are occupied with lengthy Inquisitorial tribunals or other meetings between Inquisitors, again taking time to travel there (as a real world example, consider the efficiency of business trips to meet business partners for just a meeting or two) - occupying not just one Inquisitor but a few at once. Others are currently on space stations, with the Imperial Navy, the SMurfs or AdMech.

So I would assume that on the majority of planets, there's no Inquisition present for most of the time - or so they think.

This is probably a given, but Calixis is at the edge of the imperium...

Its like the wild wild west out there, so I'm guessing they NEED extra inquisitors... some parts of the imperium prolly only have 1 or less per sector. I'm guessing the more colonized an area is, the rarer they are.

Just like when you place risk... your army isnt in the middle of your empire... its at the borders.

Not just at edge either LB, an edge that is a sector away from the Eye of Terror so pretty much a hotspot.

Add to that there a good but (unknown) number of worlds that aren't listed, newly discovered, recovered from a crusade. Many of the inquisitors while techinically operating in the sectory may well be in neighbouring sectors or beyond the borders (as other people have said).

Plus with the transit times as they are in some cases and the Inquisitors needing to travel a lot a fair number could be between worlds at any one time.

As final point one of the things that it does bring up is that those knowledges, ciphers, peers etc in the inquisition might be a lot more useful if (on civilised worlds at least) there is a fair chance that there's other inquisitors in the vacinity to contact.

What about the Enemy within?
