How many decks?

By riplikash, in Rogue Trader

Who has some good guesses for how many decks are on a ship?

I've been assuming it averages out to 1 deck per 20 feet or so (actual decks would be about 15ft, and added an extra 5 to account for hulls, machinery, and other things that make it so a ship isn't just livable space from top to bottom).

That puts a kilometer tall ship at about 150 decks.

Thoughts?

I think that the Gun deck will be much bigger 60-100ft high and the holds will be bigger depending on the size of the ship so I would say possable 80-100 decks.

I figure most bulk holds are multi deck affairs with catwalks crisscrossing them. Gun decks and lighter bays would also be multi deck spans.

I think it's more a matter of how many do you want to have, and how much detail do you actually need?

I think 100-150 decks is a good number. Some of the facilities, like the bridge and the temple shrine are going to be much taller, and some decks might only be tall enough for cherubim to move through.

A Lunar Class Cruiser is 4,000 meters long. It is 1,600 meters from its keel to its top. If your decks average 5 meters (15 feet) high, that give you 320 decks high. However, this I figured from the lowest fin to the top of the dome. If you eliminate the fins which I do not know why you would, you can reduce the number of decks to 240.

Now if you look at it with a 7 meter high deck, close to the 2o feet you used, you get 228 decks from keel to top, or 171 minus the fin. I think this explains why many people say the ships are scaled wrong.

You're all assuming that the ship design is even based on a concept of "decks". these are millenia-old ships of ancient design. All of which have been refitted over and over again, fixed with scraps of other ships, smelted asteroid ores and whatever else is handy. There are no blueprints or deck plans.

In my mind the concept of rigid decks and organized compartments might be true for the "better" parts of the ship - where the ship's officers live, Luxury Quarters etc.. Everything else is more like a sprawling slum of corridors, access shafts and makeshift living quarters. And that's on a ship without a Tenenbro Maze. A really innovative GM might require Navigation(Shipboard) rolls for players to get around their ship quickly. happy.gif

Two other ideas to make counting the number of decks difficult:

- Who says that the decks have a uniform height ?

You could have one deck 100m high, another that it only 3m. Even worse, you can have a deck that is a different height depending on where you are on the deck.

- Who says that the decks are nicely aligned ?

Lets say that all the decks are 7m high. However one section of the ships had it's decks shifted a meter or two due to battle damage. Imagine the area where they meet.

- Who says that all decks agree on the direction of 'up' ?

You have artificial gravity. Up doesn't need to be consistent, maybe someone installed a component upside down.

Mix these issues together and the number of decks is now a complex question.

dont forget tech take place too ammo for a braodside macro cannon are pretty huge and power conduit air vent and all other part take lot of place too

i probably go with 1 deck per 10m with section where element take more of one deck like trophie room , god emperor shrine ...

command bridge , hangar , cargo hold , gun deck section surely go on more of one deck same for engine room

and some section may have point of entry common between them but different deck organisation like cargo section may have 1 deck every 30m allowing vehicule to move cargo in different storage area or to the loading bay

you may have inside transport equipement for ammo and for people like elevator , metro station and convoyer

at end is up to you to decide how your ship is strutured

I am just taking a model and giving a general idea based on the stats. I of course realize decks will be different sizes and some mish mashed. He wanted a basic idea, thats all. However, the I prefer more regularity in the decks, except for the special areas. I do expect "crew ville" to be like a maze, and lower levels to be wild.

Hi,

At the Anargo Sector Project CELS started the Venturer project. A pity it will most likely never be completerd...

It's.....beautiful! sorpresa.gif

Why will it never be completed? I occasionally lurk around the fringes of the splendid Anargo Sector proect, but must admit I haven't been there for a while...what's happening with it?

Hey,

Kage is re-envisioning Anargo somewhat. Make it more open and less 'set'. This to make it easiers for players to customize. New site (same forum). History of anargo changed somewhat.

It is a slow moving thing but it has a heading.

CELS got demotivated and stopped on the Venturer. He asked for help (google sketch skills needed) but no one jumped in. He has all the interior pieces available. So if anyone wants to jump in...

That's a shame, it's a fantastic piece of work. I wish I had some artistic/programming talent, but sadly I don't so I can't help.....d'oh! sad.gif

Is it possible to get the sketchup files?

I'll see if I can get hold of CELS.

Hi,

mail me at [email protected] and I'll bring you in contact with CELS. He is happy to hear someone is interested so if anyone wants to jump in mail me and I'll hook you up with him.

I sent you a mail.
