Setup phase

By ed00011, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

In the setup phase players put some cards face down. Those are characters and locations. In the Core Set rulebook there there is a Suggested Play Area and it shows that locations are placed closer to the player and characters are beyond them (closer to the opponent). My question is: is this mandatory? May a player put all the cards (characters and locations) in the same line so that he won't give his opponent an information about the number of characters and locations he places (or try to confuse opponent by placing lets say a location in the characters line or vice versa? In the instructional FFG film there is shown that the players place locations closer and characters beyond - just so when the cards are revealed, they all are in their places for the play but is there an official rule that clears that matter?

I don't believe I've seen anything official regarding this. I tend to place my setup cards in a line and organize them when revealed.

That is actually a really good idea. I am going to start doing that. Knowing how many characters you are going to put out on set-up would likely influence their set-up. However, I have a sneaking suspicion that most people just try to lay down the maximum number of cards to take advantage of the free card-draw that this provides. That is what I usually do anyway.

In general, people just drop a pile of 1-7 cards in front of them during setup and don't actually organize the cards in the game space until they flip them over. But there are no rules one way or another. Heck, there is no rule that says you have to put your characters in a forward rank and your locations in the rear. People can set up their game space any way they want.

I never set mine up properly until after revealing them, before that its all one line.

BTW Can you look at the opponent's used plot pile? There is no rules about this. It can be important at the tournament.

I think it is in the FAQ. I know you can look at but not change the order of an apponents discard pile though.

Yeah, but my question is about plots.

Plots in the used pile are open knowledge. It would be impossible to monitor City plots or things like "To Be a Wolf" otherwise.

You could prove that you have required cards at the moment of playing those cards. Anyway, I just wanted to confirm, since there is no rule.
