First time GM for Dark Heresy: Campaign Review

By Generalian, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

Given out to the players:

It is said that "in the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war." But perhaps that is not true. Perhaps there is something more than war, something that seems to prevail in every corner of the galaxy: secrets.

There are no innocent secrets in this world, where rumors of sedation can lead to the execution of entire regiments. Dark aliens lurk in the shadows, sowing discord through lies and deception.

The galaxy is rife with aliens, witchcraft, heresy, and mutation. And you, you 'lucky' few have been chosen to combat it. Welcome to the Inquisition, acolyte. May the Emperor grant you a glorious death in his name...

Your first mission, and you've got no choice in this matter, is to travel to Lorantis, a desert agri-world. There lies the infamous Malkion Race Track, which earns millions of thrones every day. Three days ago, one of the riders was found dead in hid room, a common sight, unfortunately this is not the case. The rider had entire head sliced, but only the skull was missing.
We believe this was work of heretic cultists and therefore cannot let the public fall into mass hysteria or let the race track be consumed by traitors. Find this cult by any means, infiltration or any other method you deem necessary. Find it, and destroy it, before we have no other choice then to call Exterminatus.

And maybe then you'll prove yourself valuable enough to learn just who it is that has dragged you into this life...
Consider this easy compared to the horrors that await you and your team…

Sgt. Johnson of 301st Cadian gambles a lot and is known for having a short temper.

Guardsmen have been sighted moving crates at night onto a large vehicle.

The sisters of battle have an outpost near the race track, they do not know the situation… yet.

A large stash of axes is found inside one of the food booths at the stadium.

The same symbol is found inside the helmet of a night guard.

Inside the computer mainframe is a map of the old tunnel network.

Sgt. Johnson wins big at the races and leaves immediately

A mercenary is paid to kill the party and was hired by a man named Redrick

Timed hallucination explosives are set off inside the parties room.

The party wins big at the races… it was all rigged to get them to the free tickets to the final race.

Rumors of another dark elder invasion are spreading throughout the hive, people are worried.

A space marine chapter called the Vorpal Swords have spent the last 10 years constructing there new base on the planets’ surface in order to prepare the planet for any future Dark Eldar raids.

During the Gheistos Cataclysm in M41, the Vorpal Swords assisted in stopping a Daemonic incursion of the planet Gheistos. The Vorpal Swords deployed via Drop Pods at multiple sites across the planet. One assault attempted to relieve the Planetary Governor's Fortress but was attacked by the rampaging Bloodthirster Skarbrand. Another assault on the Devlan space port surrounded the Daemonic forces and succeed in closing a major Warp Rift.

Main Scheme:

Khorne cultists are planning to use the race course to unleash a greater demon. The course itself will be the chaos icon and the 5 million attendants that are to be attending the final race event are to be the living sacrifices. For the circle to only summon Khorne demons, the sacrifices must kill each other in a fit of rage or willingly. This will be done by a special rage inducing serum that will be given out and activated during the grand final race. The demon will used to enact revenge against the Vorpal swords and prevent the oncoming Dark Eldar Invasion.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

One thought, since you asked. Given the time involved in astropathic communication and warp travel, if the acolytes are coming from off-world I suggest:

  • an informant (not a full acolyte but a loyal ally) working for the Inquisitor noted the first murder and sent an astropathic transmition to the Inquisitor launching the investigation
  • a week or two have passed between the intitial transmition and the acolytes arrival on the planet,
  • in that time more killings or other suspicious events have taken place (have the local authorities take notice? are they investigating on their own? will they assist the acolytes, or have they been compromised by another force to cover up the events? perhaps the local crime syndicates, unrelated to the cult, are trying to cover up the killings because of their controling interest in the racetrack)
  • the local informant meets the PCs on arrival and can act as a local guide or (if you don't want them to have a local guide) the PCs go looking for the local informant and find him dead (are the heretics now aware the acolytes are coming? or did the crime syndicates, unaware of what is really happening, kill him as part of their coverup?).

interesting.... since the information about the dead racer is known to the world, but not about how he was killed. I would say that this was information that was covered up and given to the inquisition by an informant.

any other suggestions for making this more exciting besides the obvious
