A little flurry on the fluff

I guess we can agree then that it's best if the Imperium doesn't have to find out whether 'nids can make the trip or not...

It sounds like a disaster waiting to happen... a single cruiser guarding such an important gate. You would think that since they cannot have a station set up on that side, that they would set up a massive blockade on the other side of it just in case.

Yeah if the nids sneak something through there, calixis could be pretty boned gran_risa.gif .

But who knows how many genes have already infiltrated the calixis sector demonio.gif ? Ultimately I think that´s up to the Gamemasters.

Ultimately, the question of whether or not hive ships and other bio-ships can traverse the gate is down to every individual GM. I would say that hive ships, kraken, and similarly massive bio-ships could survive the transit mostly unharmed, smaller ships would probably die or be badly injured.

However, my own impression of the incomprehensibly alien hive mind is that it has no interest in technology, and would not seek out the gate. Even if genestealers or lictors were carried through the gate, there is little chance that they would understand how they got to where they did, nor would the hive mind comprehend or care. It would just continue its advance, and maybe divert other hive fleets toward the more distant Calixis sector. It's been indicated that the hive mind avoids regions of space that are "unnatural" to it (such as the Eye of Terror, the C'Tan Outsider's Dyson sphere); the Well of Night could certainly fall into that same category.

The conspiracy DOES have a purpose. Calixian worlds would be happy to contribute to a campaign in the halo stars as this is very nearby. colonising local sectors for the imperium would be good for trade, mutual defence, etc. The Jericho reach on the other hand is the other side of the galaxy. Conquering it will not benefit the calixians at all and so they might be reluctant to support the crusade since they will not reap the rewards.

The exception becomes if they start using the warp gate but they are currently unaware of its existence and also, by its very xenos nature, it is a) unholy, b) unreliable (will it stop working randomly? eat every 5th ship.....?) not to mention c) extremely vulnerable to blockade.

When they find out it might connect them to a tyranid hivefleet....you can bet they won't want to contribute any more resources, they'll be clamouring to destroy the **** thing.

I would think the rank and file trooper would be more willing to put their life on the line and be more effective assets protecting their own worlds then those on the other side of the Galaxy.

I think you are right about that they would not seek it out. I could also see that, being so vast, a fraction of the fleet might accidentally run into it for some reason or another (I.e. chase a ship through it). If that happened, and they found a world with sufficient biomass, they could create a whole new splinterfleet in the calixis sector. Bad times.
