New Space Dock & Imperial Secondary Ability

By kaitei, in Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition

Hi All!

I have a question about the secondary ability of Imperial Strategy Card. I have just built a new space dock. Can I use the secondary ability of Imperial Strategy Card, forcing the new space dock to build units at the remainder of the same round?

I know it may be a stupid question> < Thanks!

I'm pretty sure the answer is "no." Space Docks cannot produce units in the same turn they were built. This is one of the few (if not the only) situations where the game has a memory that's not recorded with tokens.

Correct. You can never produce units at a brand new space dock

Thanks! It means if I build a new space dock by activating a system A, and later I use the primary ability of Warfare to retrieve a CC in the system A, I may not use the new space dock later, right?

Indeed, you may not produce in a Space Dock in the same round it was built - according to the game rules p. 26 (middle column) "Next round the Space Dock may begin producing units for its owner."

If you knew the rules but was unable to tell what has the priority - cards / abilities or general rules then in most cases it the cards / abilities.

In your presented example the Strategy Card allows you to produce but doesn't give you another / next round. You're still in the same point in time as everyone else :)

Hope we could help.

The same restrictions apply. It's the same game round and the game rules prevent producing g in the same round the Space Docks were built, not the same activation.

Thanks all!! Now I consider : There's no way forcing a new space dock produce units.

Correct. You can reactivate the system and do everything else one normally does in an activated system. You could even build at a second space dock that had been in system since last turn, but you couldn't build at the one you just made.

Spin off question, I've been wondering about this for a while but haven't tried it yet.

Situation: System with two planets (A and B). Planet A has a space dock, planet B does not.

Since moving into a system allows building (so long as combat does not occur).

And since a transfer action allows building in one of the systems involved in the transfer (after all movement is complete).

Could the system be activated to build at space dock on planet A, as well as build a new dock on planet B?

Realizing, multiple docks in one system does mean production will likely be higher then fleet supply, and that it can be hard to manage production in the system since the docks can't co-op any of the units produce. (ie: can't pool the Sarween Tools bonus; also can't buy a pair of GF and have each dock make one of them, same with fighters.)

You can still build in the activated system if combat occurs, AFAIK, it's just not often that the attacker will have a space dock in system from previous turns. If, for example, the attacker was retaking a system that an enemy had blockaded, but not yet invaded the planets to destroy existing SDs. Assuming the attacking player successfully defeated the enemy and thus lifted the blockade, he could then build whatever he wanted in the Build Phase.

The DEFENDER cannot build in the activated system, because it's not his turn. Even if he repels the attacker and has an SD left, he can only build during his own turn.

Yes, you can do that. You couldn't build anything at the dock on planet B (obviously) but you can build at the dock on planet A AND build a new dock on planet B, for sure. Assuming you control both planets, of course. :P
