When using a mortar on a hex with 3 units do you roll once and apply it three times or do you roll once for each unit?

From my understanding you roll the attack once and then apply it to all units in the hex. Roll separately for each defense because they might be different; especially if it is suppression fire because some units might be elite or have officers.

You roll once to attack and individually for defense.
