Timing Q: Smuggler's Cove

By Dr.Cornelius, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Smuggler's Cove
Challenges: During a <power> challenge , kneel Smuggler's Cove to choose 1 participating character. Until the end of the phase, that character gets +2 STR and gains stealth.

Is there a timing issue with this card? Does the stealth "work" on offense, on defense or both? As far as I can tell, as a practical matter you can grant an attacking character stealth, then use that stealth per the rules. The stealth ability does not appear to have much practical use on defense, but I could be wrong.

Yes, when you use Smuggler's Cove on defender, then stealth is useless, but he can for example stand after the challenge and attack with this gained stealth.

Actually, stealth is very useful both on offense and defense, because your opponent cannot declare stealth on characters with stealth.

True, it is useful for a character on the defending side to have Stealth because it prevents them from being bypassed by attackers with Stealth. However, I think Rogue30's point is that Smuggler's Cove's ability to grant Stealth to participating characters is pretty much useless to a defending player. As the defender, you cannot give Stealth to one of your characters with this card before defenders are declared because they are not "participating" yet. And giving them Stealth after defenders are declared defeats the purpose since the attackers will have already bypassed anyone they are going to bypass. You can always use it to give them the +2, though.

Stealth is useful on a defender. This card is not useful to give a defender stealth in time for it to be useful.

Oh, ok, got it. I did not understand at first what Rogue30 was saying. ;) Thanks for clearing it up!

Does Smuggler's Cove timing work such that Stealth can be assigned to an attacking character, and then the attacking character can use Stealth to bypass a legal target?

i.e. is there an opportunity to trigger Smuggler's Cove after attackers are assigned but before Stealth is assigned?

I believe this timing would also apply in reverse with Frozen Moat, to remove Stealth after an attacker is assigned.

Of course.

-attackers are declared

-player actions <Smuggler's Cove

-declaring stealth and then declaring defenders

Correct. Just remember that Frozen Moat can't take away stealth gained by Smuggler's Cove as it's not printed.
