Can heroes be attacked by another hero in town?

By Jujitsu, in Runebound

Not that hero vs. hero happens often in our games but occasionally if someone gets a really nice item from the market other heroes will go for it. So, I have a couple questions regarding hero "Combat between Heroes" that I couldn't find in the rules:

1) Can you attack another hero in a town?

2) If so, can you take a market turn AND attack the other hero both in your turn (aka sequence)?

Yes. There's no rule against fighting in town, it's just that it doesn't happen very often.

This I'm less sure about. Technically the Adventure step (wherein one fights another hero) and the Market step are two separate phases. Generally they are mutually exclusive because there are no adventure counters on town spaces, however, if you had such a situation (ie: by fighting a hero) you could theoretically do both.

On the other hand, the rules do say "after the [defender] is defeated or the attacker escapes, the hero's turn is over." (pg 9) Remember that the roles of "attacker" and "defender" switch after every combat round, so the "attacker" here is not necessarily to one whose turn it currently is. To read this line literally it sounds like the acting player loses not only his Market step, but also his Experience step after attacking another hero. I'm not entirely convinced that that's what's intended, but it's certainly one way to read the rules.

I think you're right except for the last part (which I quoted). The rule actually states: "When a hero is defeated or the attacker escapes, the combat ends and the player's turn is over". With that, it shouldn't matter who is the attacker or defender in the attack phase it's still all during the hero who originally started the attacks turn. And since you can only interact with another hero during the Adventure part of your sequence (found this in the rules after I posted the question) then I guess it makes sense you would not get a Market turn.

You did bring up a good point though regarding experience, if the players turn ends after you complete combat then do you forfeit the experience part of your turn?

Also, assuming no one retreats and a hero gets knocked out, does he stay in that town or does he go to the next closest town? Staying in town opens him up for easy attack the next turn as well. (Yeah the guys I play with can be that cold, if that's what you're thinking lol)

I received a quick respons back from FFG, the customer service there is awesome!! Anyway, I thought I would share what the responses were in case anyone was curious or had the same questions:

1) Can you attack another hero in a town?
A: Yes.

2) If so, can you take a market turn AND attack the other hero both in the same sequence?
A: No. You must encounter another Hero during the Adventure step, which is BEFORE the Market step. After the combat between Heroes is resolved, the player's turn ends, so the Hero won't have the opportunity to take a market step.

3) If a hero gets knocked out in this way does he stay in that town or travel to next closest town? It seems that if he just stays where he is and is much weaker, due to what he lost, he is prone to be repeatedly attacked by that player.
A: He stays in the town. The defeated Hero can move out of the town during his turn and has an advantage on trying to "outrun" his stronger opponent. When a Hero is defeated all of his wounds and exhaustion is discarded so he can roll all 5 movement dice. It's a good chance the winner of the Hero vs. Hero has at least one wound or exhaustion so he will only be able to roll 4 movement dice (remember that the winner of the battle cannot take a market step and heal during the same turn).

4) Since the attackers turn is over after resolving the battle, does he forfeit the experience part of his turn which is after the Adventure part?
A: Correct. When your turn ends prematurely such as getting knocked out or in this case initiating a Hero vs. Hero combat, you forfeit any remaining steps including the market and experience step. Also note that if you attack a Hero on an adventure jewel you can only encounter the adventure OR the Hero.

Thanks for getting these answers and posting them! I don't think my group has ever even considered fighting in a town. Good to know exactly how it would work if we wanted to!

Ditto. I learned a few things we've been doing wrong with the cities. Very helpful, and thanks.
