Von Däniken and other references

By Ludlov Thadwin of Sevenpiecks, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

I just recently got Winds of Magic and I noticed something funny: I think Ehrwig von Dankien is a reference to Erich von Däniken, the real-world guy who wrote theories about a superior alien race visiting Earth at the dawn of civilisation and inspiring the Mayas if I recall correctly... The story is somewhat similar to the Old Ones history being told in the Winds of Magic book.

I also noticed the book has a reference to Chaos Dwarfs, which I thought were removed from the setting a long time ago.

I don't have the core set with me, but I seem to remember there were similar little winks and nudges there.... I like these little references. Has anyone noticed any other ones?

Yeah, there's a famous quote in v1, that talks about 'The Chariots of the Frogs,' after Daniken's book.

The Warhammer version has the added virtue of being sold as fantasy.

Heh.

Chaos Dwarfs were there at 2nd ed, at least I recall a description of demon cannons made by them during the Storm of Chaos. I guess it was in Ashes of Middenheim, but also in the in-game book Darkness Rising.

And who can forget professor Albrecht Zweinstein from Middenheim? you don't need to be an Einstein to figure out where they got that name fromgran_risa.gif

Chaos Dwarfs have not been removed from the Warhammer world, any more than Fimir (check one of the swamp descriptions in the terrain section of WFB8). GW just hasn't found a way/the time to translate them into the TTG.

I gave him the Zweinstein guy, because I thought he meant "what warhammer persona that guy was". Otherwise I hope it was a joke on his behalf, or should we be concerned?

Heheh, Albrecht Zweinstein, cool picture :-)

Zweinstein is also the Dutch translation used for Hogwarts in the Harry Potter books (unfortunatelybostezo.gif).

I noticed another one in Liber Mutatis: the story with the shroud... Reminds me of the Shroud of Turin.

Not to mention the many names that basically just describe the character's personality in German: Johannes Ehrlich, Meinhart Gierig... :)

EDIT: I just noticed his name was actually ZWEIstein, which is an even sillier parody of Einstein than Zweinstein was. Also, what's up with the character description being almost the opposite of the picture shown? :)

Ah that is very common in most RPGs, almost no conection between the description of the character and the portrait. seen it occur a lot, from WFRP to CoC. I like to call it the Writer and Artist Sensory Paradox or WASP. meaning neither is able to concieve each other's ideas. gran_risa.gif

Hahah, you should write a paper about it!

It really made me laugh reading the description of a well-dressed, businesslike man with fierce blue eyes and then seeing the picture below :D

I was trying to give him a REAL answer ^_~

Just for fun consideration: If I describe a learned man, about six foot two with blue eyes and sandy hair, learned in at least 13 languages, countless dialects and passion for history, literature, culture and university studies - you wouldn't expect to see a man walk in with a bullwhip and a fedora. Yet both accurately describe Indianna Jones.

hahaha Shinma, touchè!...REAL answers, get out of here.partido_risa.gif

And the Indiana Jones comparison, marvellous. i will add it to my paradox theory WASP.
