New to Tannhäuser

By Bearpaw, in Tannhauser

My eagerly awaited copy of Tannhäuser Revised Edition finally arrived in the mail today, and I'm working my way through the rulebook now. I can't wait to get it to the table but it'll have to wait a while still, seeing as I have two copies of the John MacNeal character sheet and am missing the Barry Daniel sheet. The mail to Thaad has been sent and I'm just awaiting her reply now.

In the meantime, I'm wondering if anyone has some tips on starting to play Tannhäuser. From skimming through the rules it's my understanding you need all five characters on each of the two factions, but what number of players you feel works out best? I was hoping to play with 4 or maybe 6 people, any thoughts on this?

According to the game manual the recommended mode for a first play is Deathmatch. Does that mean it would be a bad idea to jump into story mode to play some of the scenarios as I was planning? Maybe purchasing the Wolf and/or Yula figure to play some of the scenarios in the revised rulebook seeing as they don't include any scenarios that only require the base game, or are there better options around?

Any other tips are greatly appreciated, as I'm eager to try out this game, the theme and art appeals to me a lot.

Just a few thougths. Also welcome to the Tannhauser universe :)

I believe that this game is for 2 players, I know they paper says that it's for more but belive me, it isn't. Because there are two teams, each team has set of characters that have to play together, in most cases. If there are more players (let's say three for one team, two characters each), they can't really play for themselves but one player who thinks of some strategy, will tell others what to do, so in the end it's 1v1 with friends helping with moving your characters. Better way is collaborating with friend, so ok, 2v2 maybe but not more. If you want to play in more players i suggest another game :) .

I think deathmatch mode is not that good, but it's true that is good for first game only. Because you can get stuck just shooting at each other for five rounds hoping that you get better in dice throwing. Story/Scenario mode is much more fun and tactical.

Enjoy this great game :)

I've never played with more than two players so I won't comment on that.

I would start withe Deathmatch, play two or three games; till you get the rules down and figure out which faction fits your style of play.

After that play a round of Objective mode, then go and play a scenario, but if you only have the base game the rule book doesn't include any scenarios for it alone. There are some on the net that are for version 1.0 but most should still work. Just stay away from any that use the old Victory Point system heavily, or simply ignor that part of the scenario.

Hope you enjoy it. Have Fun.

Game plays up to 4 players at best IMO

more than it becomes a bit of a crowd.

That said, I mostly play 1 on 1 or 1 on 2

We played one versus two and it went okay. I own the game and the other two guys were pretty new and it helped them come up with better strategies. As a rule, though, I think it works better with 2.

As far as the game modes go I've only played deathmatch and some of the scenarios. The scenarios are my favorite way to play. Deathmatch is fun, and it really helps teach the character abilities if you're not familiar with them.

I hope you and your group enjoy the game.
