Deathwatch Artwork First Impressions (belated ofc)

By Face Eater, in Deathwatch

It's a lovely looking book certainly, the artwork is fantastic, but one thing stands out. All of the Deathwatch illustrated are from the 6 playable chapters. It would have been nice to get some easter eggs of some other chapters represented.

It makes it feel wierdly insular when, at least for NPC's you are supposed to be rubbing shoulders with all and sundry.

I dunno. You have to consider that FFG has created a roleplaying game in GW's universe. They are trying to sell product based around the limited Chapters that they've selected. They are also trying to sell their own game, not to glorify 40k and create sales for that game.

I know, it may sound odd to say that, but FFG isn't making Deathwatch to drive sales of 40k up. And so, they are focusing on what they're working with. And I totally understand that.

You should also consider that there may be some players of Deathwatch that are completely new to the 40k universe. So there is no need to confuse them by teasing them with art from other potential Chapters. I can already see people looking at Legion of the Damned art and going, who are these skull and flame marines? Where are the rules for them?

Confuse them? Really? Which dumbass roleplayers couldn't cope or comprehend with the concept that in the setting there are in fact more than 6 Chapters of Space Marines?

Err...the dumbass roleplayers that FFG and every other RPG is targeting nowadays. The millions of cretons who first came upon the term roleplaying within MMOs. They certainly aren't targeting long-time roleplayers or fans of 40k. Those groups are too small, and they're probably seen as a sure thing anyway.

Perhaps more new people would be drawn to the hobby if they didn't have to deal with being ridiculed by folks such as yourselves guffawing over legitimate ignorance when you could just as well and easily educate and enrich new gamers by helping them with the lore of 40K.

I like to think that most role players aren't going to be horrible confused because some of the pictures in the book show marines with an emblem on one shoulderpad that isn't in the character creation section.

Odd, my Deathwatch group is all veteran 40k fans. I also fail to see how this game caters to the "MMO crowd". The amount of people who "find" pen & paper RPG's via MMO's is going to be pretty small honestly. If you look at something like WoW, there are not many RP servers, and even on those the amount of people who actively RP enough to be interested in something "more" is pretty slim.

There are far more fans of 40k who would be interested in this game than people coming from MMO's. Besides, until I see a threat table, aggro ranges, and taunts then I'm pretty sure it has nothing similar to any MMO outside of the letters RPG.

As far as the artwork, I'm actually a little disappointed with it. Some of the pieces, namely the chapter pieces, are pretty good. However a lot of them have a more american comic book feel than the dark gothic look. I also personally dislike the cover. I think there are several other pieces of art in the book that would have been a better pick. But its really minor at the end of the day.

Odd thing about the cover, take a look at the chainsword. How do the teeth run out from the top? The solid back of the chainsword is flush with the chain leaving no room for the teeth to run through.

Alltogether, I've been pleased with the art throughout. As always a quality product.
