Pathfinding Logic Question?

By Miah999, in Tannhauser

Hey all,

I'm working on some new map ideas, and I'm thinking about columns that block line of sight. I just want to make sure I've got the basic Pathfinding idea around the columns right.

If you look below you'll see six path circles around a round column with a square base. You can't see through the round column but you can see around it.

Tell me if you think something here doesn't work. I'll worry about the problems with intigrating this into a map later.

You are breaking my head.

Look fine for me, you can see anywhere but through, nice trick with the red :) .

I don't understand why the red is different. To maintain the pattern it looks like the red half in the top left should be swapped with the blue half in the lower right. If this isn't a mistake, then the path is non-symmetrical. I don't see why the red path would work the way it does on one side and not on the other three.

Do the circles have to be there? It may be too busy but I would use eight circles and move them to the cardinal points to get you desired effect. Or go with only 4 circles. With six you will always have a circle that won't be colored right.

Anyway i think that you should be able to se "trhougth" the column. If you inspect some maps, you could se there are seemingly unlogic color circles. I think it meas that character is also leaning beahind corner or some enviromental object, he's not standing the just so he can't see a thing. Also column is somewhat similar to a person a person doesn't block LOS.

Hey thanks to everyone,

For now, I think I leave this behind, simply because one column is confusing, imagine if there are ten. It's just to much. But I'll come back to this idea if I have any epithanies.

Well you could also make the circles more than two colours each. There are tri-coloured circles on the official maps, and I don't see any reason you couldn't go higher than three if you had to. Of course, if it gets to the point where all the circles have all the colours then there's not much point in having the column anyway...

I agree with your logic concerning leaning around corners and such, however, making the column see-through would defeat the purpose of this little experiment the OP was conducting. The whole point was to figure out pathing around a relative small blocking obstacle (perhaps inspired by Greek architecture for a map to work with the forthcoming minotaur figure?)
