The Scout ability triggers a random discard when the unit "survives combat". Can a unit with the scout ability trigger the discard after an attack on a zone where no defenders are declared?

Would you say the Scout survived combat 
? As in, is it still alive? Scout needs to be in the combat and survive "apply damage" step, doesn't matter if somebody defended or not.
