I'm sure I'm not the first person to think about painting their descent minis. What have people tried that has worked and hasn't worked? I'm thinking of painting the master monsters and the heros or painting everything using white accents (clothing, etc) on the regular monsters and red on the master ones. Comments from those who have already tried it and seen it done?
Painting minis
Hi there, I'm in the process of painting the minis right now (with the help of my girlfriend, who loves painting giant spiders for some reason). We've found that it works quite well to paint the normal monsters normally and leaving special accents for the red ones. For example, a red beastmen will have a red loincloth, a red giant will have red trousers and so on. The bases we leave completely black except for red monsters, which get a red rim around the base. That works quite well for us, but you have to decide for your own of course.
I can recommend taking a look at some pictures over at www.boardgamegeek.com . A lot of people have posted photographs of their painted minis. There's some really good-looking stuff there (beyond my capabilities for sure).
As for painting the master monsters, I believe the rulebook's descriptions of the monsters can help you. A few, not all, of the descriptions will describe the master monsters as having an identifiable mark that seperates them from the horde. Might be a good thing to take a look at it, especially if trying to follow the 'lore' of Terrinoth. Just my 2 cents
I have plans to paint my monsters, but I started with the heroes. My plan is to paint the normal monsters with entirely white bases and the masters with entirely red bases. Masters will have slight accents as well, but I dislike having that be the only distinction because sometimes (not always, but sometimes) it can be hard to spot the differences in the heat of the moment. I did something similar for my Doom minis (in green, blue and red) and I think it worked out well.
There are also a ton of images of painted minis over at BGG for you to use as inspiration, if you like.
All the normal (white plastic) monsters I base coated black and painted how I wanted them. The red master monsters I ended up not touching after a failed attempt to "Dip" my minis. Didn't go well for me. Check out this thread here.
Like many others, i distinguished the normal monsters from the elites by painting the bases different colors. I also spent much more time and effort painting the heroes and settled for a mostly "slop 'n go" effort on the monsters since they're just fodder for the heroes anyway. The giants are pretty nice figures though so I put some effort into those. I tried to paint my heroes to match their character portraits so that players would easily recognize their figures.
Yep, that is my plan as well. The white Monsters will have white bases and white or cream clothes, like white pants for the giant and so on for the red Monsters. The heroes will be painted like thier picture, but the bases will be grey drybrushed paler to look like stone.
After browsing BGG I have come to the conclusion that I need a primer for soft plastic either Krylon Fusion or Rust-o-leum, Minwax Polyshade for the instant shading and Plasti-Dip to seal the whole mess. And of course before all that the miniature needs a warm soapy bath.
Do you need special paint for the minis because they are a soft plastic? Or does GW type paint work just fine on them?

GW paints work fine.
