Duplicate Talents - Into the Storm vs Core Rulebook

By Iku Rex, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

Sometimes you get a talent more than once in an origin path.

Core Rulebook: "If you gain the same Talent more than once from different sources, you may elect to trade in the redundant Talent for the Talented (choose one) Talent . " -- Sidebar page 15

Into the Storm: " f the character would receive a duplicate Talent ..., the origin path choice is automatically reduced by 50 experience points ." -- Page 17.

How do y'all interpret this? Can you chose to use the Core rule for duplicate Talents on two ItS choices? What if you get a Talent both from a Core choice and an ItS choice? -50xp or Talented?

Bonus question: Am I right that getting/selecting two identical Enemy or Rival talents in your origin path technically triggers the Talented/-50xp rules? happy.gif

These are all my interpretations following as closely to the written rules as possible:

The Into the Storm rules are specific to Origin Path options that cost xp. In this case, this specific rule overrides the general rule and you must drop the duplicate Talent and reduce the xp cost of the Origin Path selection. After doing this, then deal with any further duplications per RT15. Note that the new Homeworlds from Into the Storm do not cost xp, so any Talents coming from them use the standard rules from RT15.

I am of the belief that nothing prevents you from electing to choose duplicate Talents (or versions of Talents with the same Group), and the duplicates can each be exchanged for Talented (Choose One). Note that duplicates arising from Origin Path options that cost xp must first be discarded for a return of xp as noted above.

Note that duplicate Rival or Enemy Talents technically fall under the above, but by doubling them up and opting on taking Talented (Choose One), this makes a negative feature into a positive gain, so I'd not allow this as a GM.

Hm. How about this for rules as written: You are moving through the Origin Path and after selecting an ItS origin path choice, you a Core choice which gives you an identical Talent. According to the rules for Core origin path choices you are now allowed to replace it with Talented (Choose One). If you do that you no longer have a duplicate talent, and the ItS rule never triggers.

Nope. The Into the Storm special rule specifies that it still is applied if the Talent is gained at any point on the Origin Path. In effect, you don't apply them one at a time, you the entire Origin Path and note all of the Skills and Talents. Then you go through and deal with the duplicates as I noted previously.
