Characters jumping abilities

By Arthur Lannister, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Are Khal Drogo's or Catelyn's abilities triggered character abilities ?

The point is, in the FAQ, we can read this:

(3.6) Triggered Effects
Any effect that a player chooses to execute is
considered a "triggered effect." Thus any effect
that begins with a "Phase:" or "Response:"
is a triggered effect
. Also note that playing
an event card is thus considered a triggered
effect. A "triggered ability" is a triggered effect
printed on a card already in play.

So, considering this point, we could say that Khal Drogo's text is a triggered effect, but isn't a "triggered ability". But in th FAq, in the "Out-of-play state" section, we can read this:

In general, card effects on non-event
cards in a player's hand, deck, shadows area,
discard pile, and dead pile are not considered
to be actionable unless the card specifically
states that it can be triggered while in its outof-
play state.
Example: The card Khal Drogo (CORE T107)
reads "Response: After you win a challenge,
put Khal Drogo into play from your hand..."
Normally, actions on character cards in hand
are not active, and thus may not be triggered.
In this case, however, as the card specifically
refers to itself and executes an ability "from
your hand," it allows the effect to be triggered

even if the card is out of play (this example
being in your hand).

This example says that Khal Drogo's text is an ability and is contradicting the first point.

So, character abilities or not ?

And the real question is: Can I kill jumping Kahl or Catelyn wit Death by Payne ?

Response : After a character triggers it's character ability, kneel Ser Ilyn Payne or a Noble character to kill that character. "

Go by the definition, not by the wording in an example.

If the effect is triggered from an out-of-play state, it is considered a triggered effect, not a triggered ability.

It is worth noting that while the wording in the example refers to Khal Drogo's "ability," it never actually calls it a "triggered ability" or defines it as such. Considering all the places where the FAQ talks about passive effects "being triggered," the reference to the Khal's "ability being triggered" does not really contradict the definition of triggered abilities or classify the Khal's "triggered effect" as a triggered ability any more than saying "the location ability on Golden Tooth Mines is triggered after you reveal a plot" makes that a triggered ability.

Ok, thanks Ktom !

I dreamed to be able to kill them that way... So bad ^^

Thanks ktom.

Just one more thing I'm wondering. if Khal Drogo's Response is a character ability?

It seems so since character abilities are everything in the character text box (except for flavoir text, keywords; and traits).

So the Response would be a character ability and a triggered effect but NOT a triggered ability. Not very intuitive but makes sense with the FAQ definition of triggered ability..

But either way, the jumping effect is a "triggered" effect, not a "triggered ability;" whether you decide to make a distinction between "triggered ability" and "triggered character ability" or not.

Thanks ktom, it indeed makes sense although not very intuitive.
