What is the prize? What do you use to lure your players into open space and beyond?

Well I am just wondering what is the standard valuable that sends your RT crew blasting off into the unknown...I doubt that a chest of glod pieces would pay their salary for a week. Just curious..

Fame and fortune... If you're Rogue Trader players are not enticed by such things, then perhaps it is not their cup of tea.

They are trying to strengthen and expand their Dynasty, make it as powerful as possible.

As for items, I think having a strong profit margin is great, but finding super-wierd archeotech and xenostech is much cooler, especially if it enhances the players.

The potential for finding ships and compoenents to expand the DYnasty... at least, that's what's motivting us now.

Archeotech and planetary level wealth. .... and covering up their indiscretions that might warrent Inquisitorial scrutiny...

An inheritance....

I tend more to look at the character motivations - the ones they've picked during character generation and discussed with me at the start of the campaign - and use those as the hooks. Some characters may be enticed by the possibilities of a long-lost STC fragment, while others may relish the chance to bring the Emperor's Light to human cultures beyond the edge of the Imperium, or may instead be driven by the fear of something... the notion that the dangers of the unknown pale in comparison to the known terrors that they leave behind. A lust for unimaginable wealth is only one reason to travel the stars.

Agreed. Typically, I endeavor (Creed - 50 Achievement Points) to work in something for everyone to do at some point in the game. This is important in my mind.
