What kind of animal companions would dwarf's have?

Thanks in advance for your opinions,

Uhhhhh... badgers? They're small, cantankerous and diggy, just like dwarfs. Otherwise, bears seem to be an iconic choice.

Tribbles! Tribbles! and more Tribbles!

Dwarf can have, in my opinion, a dog, a cat, a pony (horses are to tall for them) or a bird. Maybe even a monkey - exotic and rare animal in the Empire. I don;t think that they would want to have a rat (Skaven grudge).

I think it would not be something common for dwarves to have animal companions...
Since they live fairly long lives, if they were to have them as a child, they would too early & too often see the pets age & die before they themselves mature.

Since they are mostly craftsman, miners & warriors, I would not think an animal companion would be very useful, they would probably get in the way.

However, for those dwarves that run above ground, I would suggest animals that are regarded as having traits that dwarves find admirable. Therefore most predators are out, you don't steal/take what you want, you earn it.

Dogs for loyalty & protection, donkeys for steadfast reliability & headstrong behaviour, otters for their "constructions", Badgers: Crusty, down-to-Earth loners.
Boars: Slow to anger, humble, only fights in defense, but extremely tough and dangerous when provoked.

Or if you wanna mock them, I suppose you could go with a magpie, cause they're both attracted to shiny things ;)

In Warhammer Online, some dwarf taverns have rat-fights, A Dwarf could have his trusted fighting rat.
