I hate to keep going on in the military history vein, but it is interesting, so..

The smartest thing Henry V did was picking his battlefield at Agencourt. Brilliant decision. And it was carried by the Longbowmen, because after they shot the knights down, they then waded into the muck and executed or captured the rest for ransom. Just our of curiosity, where were the pages for these knights?

Probably dead. A large number of the men at arms were killed or wounded in the front rank, and then trampled by the next rank due to the close conditions. The ones that lived were put to the sword by Harry's order, he was concerend that they might rearm and overwhelm the English. Only the highest ranking prisoners were spared.

Nox makes a good point above. Despite their artillery, the United States did lose the Battle of the Wabash to the natives. Almost the entire United States Army was butchered (Custer is for amatures), Washington had to offically pardon the commander, who had the misfortune to survive. (Little things they don't usually bring up in history class.)

Ultimately - there's enough variety in our own four thousand year recorded history to basically invent any scenario you want.

You want the natives to be superstitious and easy to beat - DONE

You want them clever and fierce - DONE

You want them capable of beating overwhelming odds (Zulu warriors - I'm looking at you) - DONE

You want them to worship the "Sky Gods" - DONE.

Or own history supports every scenario anyone could probably ever come up with.

I think the most important thing is to not have a narrow view of it - not all natives on all planets will react in the same way.

Leave your Explorers guessing - and always afraid.

Isandlwana was a rather rough buisness, wasn't it? I liked the Wabash better. 3,000 against 1,500 is a bit better then 20,000 agaijnt 1,500.
