Advancement: characteristic advance, but not enough slots left?

By Emirikol, in WFRP Rules Questions

What's the official word on this:

If I've only got one general open career advance slot left, and I rank up my career characteristic (e.g. WP for an Initiate) to a 5, am I required to have open career advances to do that or do I need to pay extra to go into the non-advance slots?

To advance a Career Attribute from 4 to 5 requires you need to use five of the six 'open career' advance slots. You cross off 5 boxes in that section.

As there are only six such slots the maximum career attribute is therefore 6.

If you only have one open slot left you cannot increase a characteristic as a career advance. The maximum non-career attribute is 4 as non-career advances only allow 5 advances to be paid.

Therefore in your situation you cannot raise your willpower without changing career.

I plan on letting players use the non-career advance slots for career advances if they so choose - with the caveat that the advances spent there don't count towards career completion & keeping the 5-advance limit for each of the two slots in effect.

To me, it doesn't make sense that a character always has the option of advancing two non-career characteristics (well, to 4 at least), while only being able to advance one primary characteristic.

Increasing career attributes sucks up so many open advances it really hobbles a career.

Edit: All I said above is wrong, I am sorry if this is adding confusion.
