Rank 2 vs the inital 400xp

By player719663, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

Are you supposed to count the initial 400xp towards your rank?

Will you reach rank 2 after 100xp "in game" or 500 ?

100 xp in-game. So rank 1 is pretty ridiculous for players, yes :)

Pretty sure Nihilus is correct but in the spirit of fleshing out characters and granting them a few extra basic abilities and skills at creation and "prelude" level, we have chosen NOT to count the 400XP towards the first level increases. Our group counts 500XP for Rank 2 as being 500 XP earned in-game, despite the fact that I'm pretty sure that's not what is intended. (Thankfully, RT made this much clearer in thier core rulebook)

Honestly I count it as the first 400xp for rank 2. 'Course I can see the use in having them work for 500xp before reaching rank 2 as well.

Considering that many careers lack really essential stuff before attaining rank 2 (like the guardsman without Common Lore IG and War, if I recall correctly), it's probably best to let them count and get over that first level as soon as possible.

In sum, if youre looking for the "official" answer: the 400 xp counts towars Rank 2.

Ok, I know this has been on one of the forums before, but I'm going to add my 2 coppers worth to clarify some things.

The initial 400 xp, if spent in a background package, does NOT count towards your career.

If the background package does not use all of that 400 experience, then you can spend experience left over in an advance in your tree, and then that DOES count as part of your experience total.

This can be very important to track this way.

One of the points someone made in the other post, was along the lines of "If you then chose to spend some of your 400 in a stat advance, would it then count against your limit of 4 advances?". The answer was somewhat long and drawn out, but the basic answer is yes.

If you don't count the 400 experience, to buy things in your career tree as part of your career, then there is nothing to stop a player from spending points and gaining several early stat bumps, and unbalancing the game. Think carefully before allowing a player to do this.

But background packages are different. Many of them have balancing points added in, and as such don't count against your total experience as a Acolyte.
