Flying Monsters 'Sky' Questions

By RocksLikeToast, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hey i'm a n00b here... just bought AH and am having a fun time so far but am still trying to get a grip on all the rules. One thing that me and my girlfriend are having trouble with understanding is the correct protocol for flying monsters. I understand what is outlined in the rulebook about them attempting to move to the nearest investigator or the investigator with the lowest sneak and if they can't then they head to the sky. But what i'm confused on is:

a) if they are connected to all street locations in the sky does that mean I must make an evade check when passing through all streets?

b) do the monsters come back from the sky only if they can move again?

c) if a player stops in a street location do they not need a movement to descend on them

just need some clarrification

-thanks

Hello.

Q1: No. The night sky is a separate location which is connected to the street. You only need to evade a monster anytime the investigator and the creature remain in the same location.

Q2: Yes. As all monsters the flying creatures move when the Mythos card reveals their dimension; and then, if an investigator is out in the streets, the flying creatures moves to him. For the flying creatures the exactly same rules apply as for the other creatures of doom.

Q3: They need a movement. As with all monsters in AH the flying monsters only move during Phase V, the Mythos Phase, if the Mythos card shows their dimension. If all the investigators (fresh meat!!!) are out in the streets and a flying monster is in the night sky, it wouldn't even think about moving to an investigator, if the Mythos Card does not show the monster's dimension (triangle, circle, square or whatever ...).

Enjoy AH!

a) no, they don't count as in the street locations while they are in the sky. You only need to evade them if the monster token is actually in the street location.

b) Correct, they stay in the sky until their movement symbol comes up on a Mythos card again. (Mostly. I don't remember if the base game has any Mythos cards that have all flying monsters move or anything similar)

c) No, the flying monster still needs to have it's symbol come up on a Mythos card. The player is safe (relatively speaking) until then

Hope that helps happy.gif

heh thanks for the clarification... that helps alot the thing that is annoying about the flying monsters then is that they can't be attacked head on to try and keep the monster count low... me and my g/f played our first game mostly right then... except we ended up making the game harder on ourselves by having to evade the sky monsters when passing through any streets. It could actually be a pretty annoying or devlish houserule if anyone cares to try it.demonio.gif

Yeah, often the best way to "clear the skies" is to close the right gates, and remove them buggers by symbols. (Which is why Wraiths really suck.) If you get a couple of expansions in the future, there will be a few items that affect the sky; it won't be a frequent solution, but it'll be more than having to rely on the right Mythos card to help you out.

heh thanks Maddok just finished setting up the board for game number 2... hopefully this one turns out a to be more of a successful attempt with less flying monsters and less Dholes (he was a major pain for us last game especially with the AO that increased monster toughness by 1).
