Collector Edition Marine Backgrounds

By Polaria, in Deathwatch

The purpose of this thread is to collect written backgrounds or descriptions of Collectors Edition Marines into one place. The idea is that the thread would eventually form a list of several dozen (eventually several hundred maybe? or even 2000?) thought out characters aspiring Deathwatch Gamemasters can use to spice up their campaigns. Thus I ask everyone who has answered the Collectors Edition rollcall to take a few minutes to write a bit about "their own marine" and post it here. Submissions of all lenghts are equally welcome.

So, now that you know what this is about, here is mine. Read and enjoy:

Frater Astrotechnicus Mikail
Chapter: Raven Guard

Mikail is slightly shorter than average marine. His white skin and raven black hair betray mark him unmistakably as a member of Raven Guard chapter. The myriad grey tattoos covering most of his skin are actually highly sophisticated form of electrical interface weaved into his carapace allowing him to communicate with machine spirits almost instantly. Along his spine goes a tubular shell made of armored steel, titanium and ceramite housing an extremely heavy-duty power-source. Together with the interface tattoos he is able to use the power source to remotely power many typical STC constructs.

Although fully trained in the rituals of maintenance and repair the talents of frater astrotechnicus Mikail lies not in maintaining the machines, but in communicating with their spirits to extract and analyze all sorts of information. While serving Raven Guards his duty was to collect information from sensors and field units, analyzing it and refining it into actual intelligence data the Raven Guard strike-teams need to find, pre-empt and engage their targets. In Deathwatch his roles has expanded from surveillance and target acquisition to datamining the heretical machine spirits of xeno artefacts to find out important information on xeno tactics and weaknesses.

Mikails power armor is of older Mk VI “Corvus” type and looks worn on the surface. Its systems, however, are in pristine condition and its machine spirit is almost an extension of Mikails own mind. The armor is painted in typical deathwatch black with raven guard insignia on one of the shoulder pads. To signify his belonging to Cult of Mechanicus the helmet of the armor is painted the rust red of the Adeptus Mechanicus. In addition to the power armor he regularly wears a servo-harness and is at times escorted by a gun-servitor equipped with a melta-gun. As personal weapons he carries a bolt pistol and a power axe adorned with Mechanicus symbols. Mikail is known to be an especially fast and accurate shot with his bolt pistol.

Heres my characters background its a little rought but Im working on it:

Brother Antoninus Severus Collius
Height: 7’7”
Weight: 354lbs
Age: 85
Gene Stock: Dark Angels
Chapter: Angels Of Absolution
MOS: Assault Marine

Observed Personality Traits and Skill aptitude:
Like most sons of the Lion; bother Collius has proven to be extremely introverted though belying his nature is evidence that he both deeply inquisitive and analytical-1. From observation of his interaction with the other marines of the Death Watch he also carries a deeply ingrained loathing of marines from the Space Wolves chapter-2. He also seems to have been trained at some point in the past to resist psychic probes (see attached report). On the professional side of things Brother Collius shows a firm grasp on the basic principles of medical care and first response aid and is quite proficient in his field craft as an assault marine having served as a Vanguard marine in the 4th line company of his home chapter.

1-perhaps so to a fault
2- A common trait amongst the Dark Angels and there descendent chapters.

Physical profile: Brother Collius is of an average height for a space marine though he is possessed of a slender build. He has emerald Green eyes and black close cropped hair. Aside from the standard Gene Seed Implants the only implants of note are a single Service implant stud above his right brow and three synthetic fingers on his right hand.

After action report from Liberian Caleb Moss of the Blood Ravens, on subject 324118 Antoninus Collius.
After a minor Geller field fluctuation on the HMS Heaven’s Spire, it was though appropriate to conduct a probe of the arriving inductees for any form of Warp Taint or malady. The subject was particularly defensive, as he was able to screen and hide his thoughts from me. As such I could also find no meaning full information on the subject other then the fact I could sense no form of chaotic taint and some minor surface emotions. The individual in question is ridden with feelings of insecurity, guilt, and a sense of failure on his part, as I could find no way other than an intensive psychic interrogation to find the root cause of these emotions I have decided to deem him fit for service with the death watch, with the caveat that he be subjected to close observation for the next few months to ensure my diagnosis is correct.

Sorry about the way the transcript at the bottom is formatted I use entire lines of - to show lost parts of the communications but the thread deleted them in posting and the spell check changed transmission to transmutation, normally I would edit these mistakes but this type of forum won’t let me

Cool thread, Polaria. It seems that there is a general "need" out there for a PC and NPC repository that spans the different 40k RPG systems and, perhaps, even other systems that try and deal with the 40k universe. I've tried suggesting something similar to the Dark Reign along with a variation of the "living sector" idea but, alas, it doesn't seem to have hit the current fan imagination.

Again, though, cool idea!

Brother Aelric silverhand originaly a member of Buelwyr thunderwolf's great company until his entire grey hunter pack was killed by an unknown Xenos Beast, on the world of evistia 3, after his body was recovered by the wolf preists it was found that he still lived though only by a thread. It was expected he would not survive the transit back to the fang. The all-father smiled upon him though and he recovered though it was many months till he was recovered enough to return to active duty. As it would seem his mind was the last to recover and as such it was with an anguished howl of hate and loss he realised he was the last surviving member of his pack. Knowing that their souls could not reach the halls of russ unless he could redeem them on the field of battle. Thus he strode into the Great-wolf's hall and in front of the gathered wolf lord's dropped to his knee and recited the oath of the loan wolf. The iron priests armed him a new as his gear had been destroyed in the terrible battle that nearly took his life. With a fey look in his eye he went forth to reclaim the honour of his pack or find his wyrd. for two decades he thought alongside his brethren but always apart and many were the beasts and tyrants to fall to his twin wolf claws. Finally the great company of buelwyr returned to the fateful world of evista 3 and along with them stalked Brother Aelric silverhand. Chanting the old deathsong of fenris he strode accross that world once more. at the climax of the battle the beast arose from the mists and attacked with a cry of joy and hate Aelric charged forward ripping the beast minions in to bloody visceria in his rage. finally beast and man met once more in single combat all his brethren giving him a chance to avenge his kinsman. for two hours they thought until with a roar of anger the beast lunged for Aelric who calmly slamed his power sheaved claws into the Beasts mouth and raming straight into the brain of his opponent, though his quest was over once more aelric was badly wounded including the loss of his hand.

Returned to his brethren his fist a silver masterpeice earnign him and his pack a place in the saga's of the Space wolves at this time during the feast that followed a request was brought to the great wolf to provide a member of his chapter to replace a fallen brethren lost in combat, this request brought to him by the inquisitor in command who also returned the body and precious geneseed was honoured when Aelric volountered for this post.

and so begins another chapter in the Saga of Aelric Silverhand

(Our Deathwatch campaign is set in "current" 40K continuity, @ early M42.)

Tactical Marine Caius Atraeus hails from the agri-world of Tarentus in the Realm of Ultramar. He was inducted into the Ultramarines in 929.M41, and served as the standard bearer for Squad Decio of the Ultramarines Fourth Company, under Sergeant Nimon Pellaeus. He won two commendations during the Battle of Tarsis Ultra against Hive Fleet Leviathan: one for marksmanship, and another for his part in preventing the Tyranids from overrunning and destroying an evacuation route and the civilians therein. After the Tarsis Ultra campaign ended, Atraeus was requested by and seconded to the Deathwatch. It was only the opportunity to learn more about destroying the hated Tyranids that compelled Atraeus to set aside his cherished duty as standard bearer.

Atraeus has a warm and welcoming demeanour, and gets along easily with most he meets. His homeworld values of hard work, tenacity, and community spirit have only been strengthened by his term of service in the Ultramarines. Like all Ultramarines, he has a fathomless, burning hatred of the hive fleets, and willingly undertakes any missions that will damage or destroy the Tyranid threat. He is a quick thinker and an able learner, and has on occasion been chastised (though never disciplined) by his Ultramarine superiors for venturing too far from the orthodoxy of the Codex Astartes. In the Deathwatch, however, his willingness to adapt and to try new strategies is an asset. He is keen to observe and learn from the tactics of other Chapters, comparing their interpretations of Codex doctrine to his own training, and when possible blending the two to achieve a superior result.

Atraeus wears his blond hair close-cropped in the traditional ‘Caesari’ style common to the Ultramarines. He retains the tan he earned working in his father’s fields as a boy on Tarentus. His blue-grey eyes glitter with intelligence and warmth. His otherwise handsome looks are marred only by the vicious scar across the right side of his head and his augmetic ear (the result of a hormagaunt’s claw-strike during the defense of Tarsis Ultra).

Brother-Veteran Mephisto of the Blood Angels

Brother-Veteran Mephisto was given his name in honour of the great Angels of Death Mephiston, known to the tribes of Baal Secundus. Such a prodigious naming only drove him further to excel in all things so that when the Angels descended to choose the Worthy, he was sure to be amongst them.

After his rebirth in the sacred sarcophagus, his determination was only strengthened by the honour of the physical transformation bestowed upon him. Raven-haired with piercing grey eyes, he possessed a grace true to Sanguinius himself and his enduring stamina set him apart from the rest of his brethren from early on. Tempered by the constant training and hardships from his early childhood, his mental stillness and strength of mind prepared him well for the presence of His Lord Sanguinius' suffering echoing in the corners of his soul.

His toughness of both body and mind allowed him to rise swiftly through the ranks of scout-acolyte after a decades of duty in both Assault- and Devastator squads in the second company, he got elevated to the ranks of Tactical Veteran on the eve of his Centennial Inauguration into the Blood Angels.
His clarity of mind and calmness of spirit under fire allowed him to command the combat half-squad under the auspice of his Brother-Sergeant.

It was during a stalemate on the Tau-held planet of Seco IV that Mephisto caught the eye of the Inquisition. Imperial forces had been unable to breach the defences of the heavily fortified fortress-cities of the Tau and their allies.
The Blood angel forces spent weeks probing the defences but met with little success, unwilling to commit against lethal crossfires or heavy long range weaponry over open fields, protected by seemingly unpenetrable power fields. The Inquisition was adamant that the cities be taken intact so orbital bombardments were held off, much to the dismay of the Imperial Commanders.

Frustrated by inaction and pushed by the urgency of the Inquistion, Mephisto led his half-squad on a mission through centuries-old sanitation tunnels long forgotten. They infiltrated deep within the city and successfully sabotaged the shield generators. This allowed the Assault squads to jump the city walls and wreak havoc amongst the defences. It had long debated but Mephisto had convinced the sergeants of the assault squads to adopt comprehensive camouflage and spend days sneaking close to the city walls across the open shrublands.
The chaos created by both assaults allowed to rest of the Imperial Forces to exploit the section of weakened defences and the armoured Spearhead of the Imperial Guard soon breached the walls.

Meanwhile Mephisto and his squad proceeded to the palace of the Ethereal present on this planet and after a swift dispatching of his personal guard, the Ethereal surrendered in the face of such onslaught and was delivered to the Inquisitor present on this planet. After the mission debriefing, The Inquisitor presented the invitation to join the Deathwatch, both in light of his successful unorthodox tactics that finally breached a month-long stalemate, as well as a means to avoid any repercussions resulting from breaking with the Codex Astartes so harshly.

And thus it came to pass that Mephisto joined the ranks of the Illustrious Deathwatch to maintain a constant vigil against the machinations of the Xenos. The Deathwatch will give him the opportunity to hone his tactical insight as well as his leadership abilities and when he finally returns to the Fortress-monastery on Baal and his Brothers after decades of service to the Deathwatch, he will receive the honour and privilege having his helmet gilded and joining the ranks of his Captain's Honour Guard.

Appearance: Brother Mephisto is a marine of average Astartes-height and a lithe and taught build, tough as nails and scarred by decades of warfare. His face has a stern look and the noble build of an ancient hero, some say rivaling the beauty of Sanguinius himself, were it not for the scars of many a battle that he wears proudly on his face. His grey eyes carry the piercing gaze of a well-honed predator as well as the wisdom of a patient leader. His raven black hair is kept short for practical reasons and a deep scar near his left eye gives it a slight squint like the look of perpetual interest and scrutiny.

His armour is a millennia old MKVI Corvus pattern with the left shoulderpad ceremonially replaced by the silver plated shoulderpad of the Deathwatch. After achieving his veteran status in his tactical squad, the helmet was adorned with a golden laurel wreath. Several purity seals protect the armour and its wearer from foul influences and ensure that both Mephisto's spirit, as well as his armour's stay pure and clear of purpose. Gifted with a compliant and experienced machine-spirit, his armour reacts with a swiftness and finesse rarely seen in newer models, allowing Mephisto to move with razor-sharp reflexes,as well as sneak as if unarmoured. Silent, deadly, and strong of spirit, Mephisto has little doubt that it is his union with this particular set of ancient armour that help to keep his blood thirst in check and stave of terrible visions of doom that he and all his brethren share.

Well, the background so far for Durus Quatinus Ferrum of the Guardian Angels, currently serving with the Legio B&C, which is kinda like DeathWatch, can be found here.
It is far to much to list in this thread and it is updated from time to time, so him having his own web page is the best solution. - He has been around since 2005 by the way and is likely to be part of the 40k universe for some time to come still.
Naturally he will not die unless it is stated "officially" on his web page. - I would love to hear about it if anyone uses him for anything. =)

Abad (Chaplain) Sylsa'saed
Height: 2.22m
Weight: 146.82kgs
Age: 132
Gene Stock: Classified
Chapter: Grey Knights
MOS: Librarian

Observed Personality Traits and Skill aptitude:
Chaplain Sylsa'saed displays high social skills and a friendly demeanor. He is inquisitive about his peers and actively engages those around him. He interacts and seems to enjoy the company of other marines in the DeathWatch, but it is unclear whether he is probing them for taint or not. He seems intolerant of in-fighting between the ranks, but allows "friendly competition" as far as it does not interfere with the mission. Like his brethren, he is a psyker of exceptional skill and control and seems to prefer to be in the front lines with his nemesis sword when in combat. He also seems to have basic mechanical and medical aptitude. He is a cohesive force in the team because of his open disposition and willingness to always jump first but does not usually wear the mantle of leadership. **Note: In spite of his friendly demeanor he has yet to answer or divulge any lore on the deamon or his Chapter. In battle he inspires by faith and and ruthlessness, where he is almost the diametrical opposite of the calm and poised man.

Physical profile: 1.7m height, dark brown skin with a hawk nose and large grey eyes. He has dark brown hair that he maintains shaved save for a long braid on the back of his head.

The Ordo Malleus' interest in the sector are higher than previously estimated. Full scope of the threat could not be ascertained at this time but the presence of a Grey Knight in a DeathWatch should be an indicator of daemon activity. Whether this will be a new trend or an isolated honor it yet to be seen. As of now the xenos encountered might be involved chaos heresies but was believed to be cult of small scale. The Chaplain's appearance suggests a higher threat. If the Ordo Malleus deemed it fit to send one of their Knights, we will honor them and the Emperor with our fire, be it against daemon or xenos.

(I know, I know: no Grey Knights in the core rulebook and unlikely to be seen in the Watch... and I might have been crazy for getting the collector's edition for a Grey Knight, but I love the guys and I hope there is a supplement to fit them in!).

Personal Notes

In so far as any of the battle brothers of the Astartes can be described as slender Brother Liandri is perhaps one of them, easily reaching seven feet eight inches he was nevertheless, not going to find his forte' with a chainsword in an assault squad. Possessing a crop of straw blonde hair cut short, but not shaved and hazel brown eyes with almost uncanny ability to judge distances down the sight of his beloved Umbra-Ferox pattern boltgun. Brother Liandri's natural skill, perhaps not quite among the acclaimed heroes like Lias Issodon of the Raptors or Torias Telion of the Ultramarines was the nevertheless counted amongst the finest marksmen in the Chapter.

A likeable enough man without the obnoxious pride or crazed zealotry of many others of his kind, thanks in part to the supreme stability of his chapter's geneseed, with the noted exception of a hyperactive Betcher's Gland, and also a lack of the usual fatalism that accompanies the ascention to the ranks of the Emperor's Finest. Liandri has served his chapter faithfuly for almost every single day of his 173 years, in a variety of warzones against a wide variety of the most perfidious and dangerous enemies mankind has ever known and dispite it, he has maintained a degree of his humanity

In a quiet moment of introspection during his MkIV battle plate's regular maintanance cycles Liandri enjoys the rare diversion of listening to vox-novels read in high-gothic, oddly enough his chosen material often includes works of military fiction, particulaly the exploits of the Macharian Crusade. During his convolescence following the Second Battle of Sagan he even found time to go so far as to produce his own biography of the Lord Solar himself. Greatly attached to his beloved bolter "Prejudice" a venerable Umbra pattern weapon which is itself several thousand years old and lovingly modified in accordance with the Codex Astartes teachings to incorporate a targeter and updated fire-selector system. Linadri often jokingly remarks that any ounce of courage or skill he has, is undoubtable down to the millenia of "practice" his wargear's machine spirits have accumulated prior to his birth.
