Errata! Initiates LOSE two skills?

By Emirikol, in WFRP Rules Questions

How does one acquire skills at creation that are "removed" from his career sheet?

Page 6:

Priests: Initiate starting Skills & Abilities
Initiates do not begin play with the Piety or Invocation advanced skills.

This is different than Apprentice Wizards, who do start with Channelling and Spellcraft already acquired.

If an Initiate wishes to invoke blessings early on, he should invest creation points during character creation to acquire Invocation.

Also, WTH is the Apprentice acquired skills list rule doing in the Priest section?

One more thing: Why don't Troll Slayers have Disclpline as a skill on their list? Are they a fearful kind of lot?

My character is a roadwarden why dont i get any free skills like wizard ?

My wizard player had to pay for his skills like everyone else. He got cantrips for free (and counter spell and such), but any other spell he pays for (let alone he also has to actually find them...).

I can't see why on earth a wizard should start with more than other classes.

Re initiate, I can only hope playtesting the different approaches to power/favour and spellcasting that they felt this was appropriate (e.g., wizards get miscasts, priests don't).

Not all priests are at the point of being close enough to their deity to actually invoke blessings.

In order to be a wizard, you must be able to manipulate the winds of magic.

Priests have other advantages, such as being allowed to wear armor with Soak and still be able to invoke Blessings, etc.

This also mirrors past editions of the game where apprentice Wizards could cast spells out of the gate and Priests couldn't until they were in their second Priest career.

So, the errata took away their ability to invoke blessings or curry favor, but they start with the card and the minor blessings (p.31). This doesn't make any sense.

Do they only get minor blessings and can't use Rank 1 blessings?

The errata didn't take away the two abilities. It confirmed that priests don't get them. The rulebook says that wizards get their two at creation, but nowhere does it say priests get theirs.

Keep in mind that players can buy actions or talents that they cannot currently use. For example, if my PC has no Focus slots I can still buy a Focus talent if I want. I won't be able to use it until I change to a career that has a Focus slot (or possibly on the Party sheet). Only in a few specified circumstances is a character actually prohibited from getting an action, such as not having Ag/St/To 3+ then you don't get Dodge/Parry/Block actions at creation.

This is just bad wording then. It should read Initiates do not begin play with the Piety or Invocation advanced skills acquired.

The way it's worded now it says that the LOSE those abilities from their career sheet and cant cast spells until they switch to disciple.

I think you are just looking for a problem. It doesn't read that way at all. The difference between a priest and a wizard is that they don't get those skills trained for free. They have to spend char points on them. They aren't removed from the character sheet.

This is true, but hopefully by pointing it out it (and all the other inconsistencies) doesn't get reprinted in the hardcovers ;) It's partially why I'm playing dumb (not that I'm not dumb..I'm incredibly dumb), but a lot of these types of unclarified issues will hold this game system backf IMHO and explain a lot about why it was such a beast to read and understand the first time when it was released. I'm going to try to find as many as I can while building characters and what I'd really like to do is go through my copy of the rulebook with a red-pen and mail the goddamn thing to FFG. :)
