Crusade/Call to War + The Hand of War for 100xp, or pay 150 xp and take Talented instead... Are both options legal?

By HappyDaze, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

The Origin Path option Crusade/Call to War grants a Hatred Talent. The Hand of War likewise offers a Hatred Talent. Using the rules from RT, the second one could be traded for Talented (choose one) Talent. Using the Into the Storm rules, the Hatred could be dropped from Crusade/Call to War and it would reduce the cost of this selection by 50xp.

Do the Into the Storm options still allow the character to pay full price and opt to substitute a Talented Talent for a duplicated Talent?

Technically, the Hatred talent is not duplicated, since there are multiple versions of the talent. Personally, I would not allow a character with these options to either Hatred talent for a choice of a Talented (skill) choice. After all, you can take Hatred and apply it to a specific Xenos species, a RT dynasty, a cult, the Ecclesiarchy, mutants, and what not. So, I do not consider it to be a duplicate talent.

Also, if you're dropping Hatred from the Crusade option for the 50xp discount, then you are not getting two Hatreds in this case, and would definitely not get to opt for dropping the Hatred you are getting for your choice of Talented.

Mind, this is not an entirely informed opinion. As I said, I've not yet purchased my copy of Into the Storm, but as far as the general rules go, it's pretty much how I think most anyone would rule it. Ultimately, ask FFG and see what Sam has to say on the matter. That way you get an official ruling on the matter. And, should you do so, please share with the rest of the class.

I agree. The option to a talent and take Talented instead exists to avoid players losing any benefit from a talent through duplication. This is not the case here, where its simple enough to just pick a different group.
