Hunting BIG game...

By lord inquisitor revan darksoul, in Rogue Trader Gamemasters

sometimes rouge traders just need a bit of fun and theres nothing quite like hunting big game on feral or death world with a few of your closest friends.......that said i thought it would be kinda cool to let them hunt things like giant lizards (dinosaurs) and the such but has anyone tried or even succeeded in converting d &d type monsters to RT?

I've never tried, but to be honest, I think you would have more luck creating them from scratch than trying to come up with some kind of conversion system.

For conversion from D20, I'd do something to the order of tripling abilities up to 20 or 25, and making them unnatural if they're above that. Since Wisdom would become perception and willpower, I'd do something like picking one to do a full conversion, and set the other one at 75% of that score.

And so on. They're quite different systems, and I think you'd have better results simply looking at a creature, getting a rough idea of it's abilities, and then statting them up freehand. That would result in more realistic stat blocks, I think, and would also let you balance the creature to the team you're trying to pit it against.

I have been working on some suitable creatures. The real problem is that weapons in RT are high powered, and would just blast right through most giant creatures.

My solution with "monsters" is to translate them over with the info provided in RT and DH, then look and see what will make that monster more survivable and dangerous. Here is an example based on a Allosaurus, which I had to use some DH info on=

Allosaurus (Base)= This represents a more intelligent giant sauropod, which makes for a better hunt. I would crank up the danger by having them work in pairs. If you really want them to be horrible, you can add the power I have included as an option at the bottom.

EXTRA POWER= Force Bolt= Range= 100m. 1d10 +2 Damage. Have these shoot from horns on the head or whatever. Maybe two modified crystals on the skull which are worth a fortune as psychic foci????

Could always roll up to the nearest hive and buy a half dozen of their most psychotic lunatics in the asylum, them on some backwater world and hunt them. Survivor gets a job on the ship for incentive* :)

Instead of toughing up the creature, instead force the RT to use less powerful weapons because they need it alive, or at least intact enough to make into a trophy.

Into the Storm has the Venator Pattern Air Yacht, for hunting big game and includes an abattoir. Weapons are a Harpoon Gun, a Net Launcher, and a Tranq Gun. It can hold 6 beasts of Average Size, but I would assume you can strap bigger ones onto its frame as long as they did not exceed the weight of 6 average beasts, whatever that might be.

Maybe they turn up at a planet to find that the locals are terrified of the big beasties that live in the woods. Then when they go to hunt them they're not big mysterious beasties at all. They're just* Tyranids. *For a given value of 'just'.

Okay, hunting big game is supposed to be a sport right? You do it for the challenge and the impress your friends.

Of course you can don your power armor and that Lascannon, but where is the sportsmanship with that? Look at RL hunters, do they carry RPG launchers? If a RT likes to 'slaughter' animals instead of a proper hunt, what will his peers say?

"I pwn this here 'nid boss with mah nine!" = cred?

Could be interesting to have a competetion with some rules. Only allowed to use hunting rifle or shotgun, for example. On a Death World like Burnscour.

Well it's up to the players what they want to hunt and when. Unless you put something more dangerous out there that they don't know they're going to face. Maybe another rogue trader knows they're going hunting and deliberately releases something they don't have the weapons for? ;)

My PCs had a lovely day on a hunting trip through the bowels of their ship. They took a whole bunch of troops and servants, picnics, beaters, spotters, etc. Then they went on a nice stroll, shot a few horrid hold dwelling beasties and such like, it was all very refined.

Although they didn't know it when they got the ship, they have a hunt master aboard whos sole job is to prepare and organise hunting trips for the ships masters. He has a whole bunch of appropriate hunting weaponry (hunting rifles, long las' dueling las pistols, shotguns, etc) for use on hunts.

It was all done pretty much as a passing mention during a particularly long warp trip, hopefully they'll remember him at some point and take him planetside for a safari.

The Inquisitors Handbook has a system for randomly generating creatures. It would be a good starting point if you just want something that doesn't have to be much of anything in particular.

I think you mean the GM Kit. It has an alien generator.

You can generate creatures with the info in the RT book. It is the same info as in the DH toolkit.
