Effects that kill at STR 0.

By Undreren, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Ok, me and my girlfriend have had a discussion about this, and we see no easy conclusion.

If i put "poisoned wine" on a str 3 character, that have "Nymeria" attached (or some other save effect), would it then die if I scorch it with Drogon?

We have two arguments:

1) As I see it, it reaches strength 0 and dies, then she can save with Nymeria, but it is still at str 0 and dies at str 0.

2) However, the other point is also good, it only reaches str 0 once, and it is then saved by Nymeria.

We are a bit confused, and we went with 2), but which one is correct?

Number 1 is correct. A save has to also remove the terminal effect in order for the character to be saved. Drogon's -1 applies to the end of the phase, and poisoned wine is a constant effect. Nymeria saves, but the character it is attached to is still in a terminal state after, so ultimately dies.

Just note that you can't even try to use Nymeria because it doesn't remove the terminal effect.

Hmmm is that correct? You can't even try to save with Nymeria?

What if the targeted character was Kennel Master whose ability is "Response: Save Kennel Master from being killed or discarded, and return him to his owner's hand."? Are you saying that Kennel Master's controller can't even try to invoke his save ability?

Yup, that's what I'm saying. From the FAQ:

A card cannot be saved from a terminal effect
unless that saving effect also removes it from
the terminal state.

But read the rest of that example. In the case of the Kennel Master, his ability could definitely be used as it is exactly analogous to the Viserys example given.

Ninja'd by the master himself! demonio.gif

Sorry, I rushed to answer the "Nymeria" question and forgot about Kennel Master.
