Story cards

By Hellfury, in CoC General Discussion

Ah, I see! Now it makes far more sense. It would be really nice to see some new, official story cards.

AGoT has several official variant types like Kingsmoot, Civil War, and the new Hand of the King. What if FFG came up with a sweet variant like that for CoC using a custom plot deck?

I always just throw one of every story (I have all, even the old CCG ones and the two promos) together as one deck. And with Hellfury's ones I have a lot of fun.

I like to run best of three games where each player brings their own customised 12 card story deck. Goes down well.

When I was initially designing the new story card effects, I ran them by Chris Long for some feedback from an experienced player who is not afraid to give an honest opinion about ideas being junk or not. He helped quite a bit in balancing about 20 of the 48 cards and then finally making sure the wording was correct.

For a very short time, their use resembled that of AgoT's plot deck in some ways before the plan changed.

It turned out better (in this instance) to just draft the cards as a mutually shared story deck for the sake of simplicity. Much easier to implement them when barely any additional rules are incorporated. Much less of a headache for everyone not familiar with AgoT to use them this way. I think for the most part, the rules fit seamlessly with the current CoC design with the multiplayer rules slightly altered for better multiplayer interaction.

That and you don't even need the draft rules to use them. They can just simply be used as new story cards.

I think this story deck proved that such new ideas could be easily incorporated to CoC. I heard on 'Le Cenacle Cthonien' Forums that some people in Belgium ran a tournament using them, before I pulled the Artscow files. For such a tiny thing, it has had some pretty positive acceptance from people outside of the FFG forums.

Yup, we made that tournament in Belgium. It was fun. Not all storycards were equally balanced, but that wasn't the spirit of the tournament.
