11 Additional character cards (fan made add on)

By Vomkrieg, in Battlestar Galactica

So, these extra characters are amazing, and while there are a few abilities that I will probably change for our group, these are ultimately a pretty awesome addition to the game. Though, there are a few other cool characters that are not included this. Mainly:

"Athena"

"Hot Dog"

Ellen Tigh

Romo Lampkin

"Crashdown" (aka Sam Witwer, who is also the Secret Apprentice from the SW Force Unleashed game!)

D'Anna Biers

Leoben

Cavil

Doral

There's a few others that would be cool as well, but these are the main people that seem like they have a lot of potential for character cards. So does anyone have any cool thoughts on character cards for these people?

I don't think those characters would work. If you have 30 characters restricted to 5 types of skill cards and a minor perk, you're going to get a lot of redundancies. I think the game works better with fewer characters who are all relevant crew members of Galactica or Colonial One. I wouldn't want a Crashdown or Hot Dog character for example, because there's nothing to set them apart from the other pilots. Athena can't be a character because this is an 'alternate' reality BSG where Boomer isn't necessarily a cylon, so she shouldn't have a clone.

It gets to a point where you're just making characters for the sake of making them, but not necessarily for the benefit of the game.

I don't mean this to sound condescending at all, I just think that if new characters are going to be added, they should have a purpose other than emulating the show or letting people play as their favorite character.

I agree with you about the "Athena" thing after thinking about it more. I'm not sure these other characters are any less significant than say Cally, Billy, and some others from the homeade expansion though, or did you not like those either? I don't think any of them are really a problem if you are able to keep them unique, and can come up with abilities that really fit them, even if they are just for people to play as their favorite characters.

I definitely can see your point though. One other thing I did see which was kind of neat was some dude on the BGG forums posted alternate character cards for the same 10 characters in the base game, with new abilities from later on in the series. So something like that would still stick more with the main characters at least, like you said.

There are some in the 11 that I don't like; the Six from "BSG:Razor" probably shouldn't be a character, since she was on Pegasus and not Galactica and because Six takes on so many different identities but "Boomer" only took on one and didn't know she was a cylon in the show until she was activated. I also think it's ok to have Boomer because she was a legitimate crew member for the first season of the show and a character that most people became sympathetic to. Cally and Billy are somewhat redundant and their powers aren't as interesting as some of the other 11, but I think they could still be worth checking out.

I guess my problem with creating so many characters is what I said before. When you get to 20+, it's hard to keep them different or each worth playing since characters who are 'better' than others will always crop up.
