A Few Questions

By KarmanMonkey, in Tide of Iron

When performing an assault:

1) Do fatigued flamethrower units in barbed wire still contribute the +2FP and -5 cover even though their firepower is zero (from being halved twice)?
2) Do units on op fire contribute their FP to an assault?

Does a unit with a specialization add the FP bonus before or after halving it (if they decided to move and fire, for example)?

" Flamethrower Assaults: For each attacking squad that has the flamethrower specialization, the attack gains +2 firepower. "

The above quote was from page 33 of the rules, which implies, for assaults, at least, that the bonus is added after any halving that might be taking place.

Additions and substractions are always done before dividing/ halving/ multiplying. Something along those lines is also in the rules.

What makes you think that the flamethrower in your example would have iots firepower halved twice? I thought in barbed wire it was -1 die. But perhaps I'm mistaken. I haven't played TOI in a while (weaiting for FoTB (-: ) and don't have the rulebook at hand.

Barbed wire is halfed, and in game terms, half of half is zero! So supporting from a razor wire is kind of difficult.

However I do think the flamethrower would pass on its -5 ability, but I'm far from sure, sinze its not realy supporting the attack...

I'd say the squad in the wire hex adds nothing to the attack since it cannot attack with a twice-halved firepower.

No.

Before.

This is interesting. The flamethrower specialization description indicates that the squad gets +2 firepower, but this states that the attack gets +2 firepower. I'd agree that the wording here indicates that the +2 is not halved in this case. However, the way this is done can lead to three different interpretations:

1. The +2 is simply not halved for assaults, even for supporting flamethrower squads.

2. Flamethrower squads add an additional +2 firepower to the attack over the +2 added to the squad's firepower.

3. This is simply a (confusing) restatement of the specialization's +2 firepower bonus.

I have no idea what the intent is, but I'd guess that "3" is the correct answer.

I agree. I do not think that the bonus is added after all other calculations are done.

I agree with the fact that it could have very well been their intention, but then again, it could've been their intent that assaults involving flamethrowers are a special case (as I'm sure we can all agree was a horrifying scenario in real life) and it was simply an oversight when explaining the effects of flamethrowers in the specialist rules.

Going by the letter of the rules, however, I'd have to say that the +2FP and -5 cover gets added to the combat and not the squad during an assault.

Well thats how assaults work anyway. You just make one big role from the cumulative attack die from all of the attacking sides combatants.

I dont know if it says or not but i think the +2/-5 should only count in close range and assaults. Maybe only assaults.
