Fenksworld resources?

By Plastic Rat, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

So I need my Acolytes to do some stuff on Fenksworld and I'm coming up with very little information on it.

So far I know the following:

  • It's a grimy, dirty hiveworld, one of the worst. Seriously, the place sounds like a major dive.
  • It serves as a subspace depot for the Battlefleet Calixis.
  • It's usually the starting point or 'testbox' for many different cults and uprisings.
  • Volg Hive is the only known named hive that I can find. (Inquisitors Handbook p25) Volg Hive is one of the worst, supplying the other hives with purified water and air. Various mutated nasties periodically crawl out of its depths. The place has heavy stubbers mounted in public places for this very reason.
  • Disciples of the Dark Gods briefly mentions somewhere that the Beast House uses Volg Hive to supply things for their arenas.

...and that's about it.

Anyone else got any further info or know where I can look? Even fan created stuff is fine. Anyone know what the other hives are called? How many there are? What the other hives export?

I do not have my books with me at the moment (somehow difficult at work...), but I think another Hive is called Magnagorsk. The Pit Thing from CA is also from Fenksworld if I remeber correctly. Regarding Magnagorsk it is said that many wear certain protective suits against the corrosive fluids/gases there and this is one of the reasons why Sollex pattern weapons are quite abundant there (to better cut through these suits). So, one might assume the Mechanicus sect Divine Light of Sollex is somehow rather prominent there (even though the sects 'homeworld' is on the other side of the sector IIRC). In my campiagn Fenksworld is the sub-sector capital of the Josian Reach. Another reason for the Divine Light of Sollex to be there might be the fact that the Logicians are quite active there (e.g. Meritech War) and are most probably actively hunted by the Sollex Secutors.

There are bits and pieces here and there (InqHB, CreAnath, DisDG) but nothing much, really. Volg is the one most of these bits focus on and all we have on that is that its a "low build" hive (a sprawl) built on swamp around huge atmospheric processors and water purification plants. And it has monsters. And everyone there carries a gun. And they have sawed-off shotguns (not heavy stubbers) mounted on rails in public places for those who don't have gun on hand. And the place pretty much sums the "grim dark" in every way.

I used Volg as a setting for civil uprising in my campaign. In the end a whole sub-sector of the hive went straight to hell (literally) and had to be "purified" with the help of local PDF units and a single orbital strike... The surviving refugees of the sub-sector (all 100 000 of them) were loaded into ships and trasported off-world to prevent the rebellion from being restarted.

Below are tidbits I've pieced together through various official sources here and there.

There are three noted hives on Fenksworld. Beyond these, much of the surface is given over to wilderness which has been steadily poisoned over the centuries with industrial wastes and other toxins.

  • Nova Castillia - the capital hive of Fenksworld. It is home to the local nobility and their servants. It houses the spaceport, as well as the vaunted Library of Knowing . Unlike many hives, Nova Castillia is not noted for having any substantial form of manufacturing; it seems to be the hub for all other major activities on Fenksworld, an industry of administration, as it were.
  • Volg - originally established as a prison, has grown into a massive and sprawling hive. Many of its citizens are free born descendants of the original prison population; free to leave when they want, provided they can pay the exorbitant transport fees. Volg is also the only hive on the planet which has water filtration and purification systems. It provides potable water to the rest of the planet.
  • Magnagorsk - Massive manufactorum foundries are located within this hive, and it seems to be the seat of power for the Sollex-sect of the Priests of Mars, if not just "regular" members of the Mechanicus. Uncertain, but I believe Magnagorsk is another hive of a "volcanic" nature, either being built upon, or near a dormant volcano and tapping into the geothermal energies in some manner to help power the hive itself.

Outside of the Prol system the Library of Knowing is the greatest resource of knowledge within the whole of the sector; both mundane and proscribed. It is overseen by House Vaahkon, which also holds the planetary governance since the times of the Angevin Crusade.

There's much more available, but I can't think of it right now. I'll get back to you with more and some references when I have a chance.

It's also said in IH on page 111 that the mysterious artisan guild/tech-cult called Cadence Arms and Incunabula is based in Nova Castilia of Fenksworld. Also, on page 119 there is a whole page about the hives of Fenksworld.

My campaign started on Fenksworld. I treat it as kind of like the "Detroit" of the Calaxis Sector: once a booming and prosperous manufacturing center (and the defacto "capital" of the Josian Reach), now sliding into obsolescence.
