closing gate (new player question)

By Zozimusque Romanus, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hi: just bought the game, am already confused. I've been wading through the forum , but can't find my particular question yet.....apologies

if this is dealt with elsewhere.

So two investigators walk into an Otherworld.... (sounds like a joke)

one gets back first, and places the "explored" token. But he doesn't want to close the gate 'cause the other bloke is coming soon and has more clues (enough to seal it). Can he just stay there and do nothing? Or is he required to close it? What encounter can he have? Can he just stay on the space indefinitely and not have an encounter? Or what?

Thanks in advance.

Why wouldn't the first investigator just leave the location with the gate and do something else? The second investigator could close and seal once he gets through (assuming that nothing bad happens to him in the other world).

More specifically no he doesn't have to close the gate, if he stays in the location he simply doesn't have an encounter so long as the gate remains open, and like Avec said he could just walk away and lose his explored token. However if a monster comes along he will have to deal with it.

Hello.

Q1: During the round in which he returns he will stay there and do nothing, unless he decides to close the gate (which he does not want to); if he stays in the subsequent rounds, he will have nothing to do either, unless a monster appears due to a monster surge or he revises his decision and closes the gate instead.

Q2: No, his choice. But as soon as he leaves, he will miss the exploration marker.

Q3: Actually none - he already had "his" encounter with the travel through the Other World; as long as the gate remains open he won't have any other encounter, because the gate "deactivates" the location.

Q4: As Q1.

As Veed and avec have already stated - why would he remain there? The next player will return, will have his own exploration marker for this particular gate and will therefore be able to close and seal the gate.

Ia! Ia!

Thanks, everyone. Makes sense. I didn't particularly want to stay in the space; the rules just kind of read like I would have to close or seal the gate rather than leave. I thought maybe you were required to try once you were through, but if not, so much the better! happy.gif
