CaliCon 2010 - The Other Northern California Thrones Event

By cha0s2, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Hey everyone (especially those of you who missed KublaCon, or even those of you who made Kubla but want a Kubla-redemption)

CALICON 2010 is finally here!!! - Oct. 9th & 10th

This year is gearing up to be the best CaliCon ever! Over the years CaliCon has evolved from a small gathering of friends/AGoT players to a large scale tournament boasting 20+ players from all over the state. The coveted CaliCon Cup, the first place prize, will be graced with a new champion's name. Will it be yours?

CaliCon is a wonderful event for all levels of players, from beginner to advanced. We encourage casual, friendly tournament play while offering that competitive edge every card player desires. Come test your skills, learn a trade secret or two and discover or rediscover why this is "The Only Game that Matters."

Sounds awesome! Someday...

Hey, isn't Brentwood in LA, and Concord just West of San Fran? Or am I mental?

Ha ha, well yes you are right, kinda. There is a Brentwood in LA (the same one OJ Simpson lived in)...but my Brentwood (the other Brentwood) is approx. 15-20 miles from Concord.

..oh and Concord is EAST of SF...I think Hawaii is the only thing West of SF gui%C3%B1o.gif

OK.... so due to crazy friends getting married really quickly the 25th and 26th no longer works for many of us.

People we know are attending have been asked, and it seems the event will be....

Moved to the weekend of the 9th and 10th of October!

There has been some confusion about how to edit the original post which seems impossible (~thank you boards!). As far as I know this has been confirmed, but not posted up here.

Looking forward to it!!!

~Just move it to Memorial Day and I can make it ;) KUBLA!!!

Works for me. This will really change up the environment of the tournament, with the new Bara set out and most likely legal. Bara Rush, Bara Knights, Bara Asshai! Got to think of an anti-Bara deck...

Ahh who am I kidding, I'll probably jump on the bandwagon.

Also, if you send a message to a moderator they have changed typos and changes to things like tournament times and dates for me in the past.

lol.... tell our boy cha0s to get on it!!! (as if he doesn't have enough on his plate)

Woot! I will be there... looking forward to it!

Ok guys, looks like the dates have been changed. Woot! If you have any questions about this event please feel free to contact me at [email protected] gran_risa.gif

Also please note that the Bara Box will be legal for this event if it out in time.

We're a confirmed 5 coming up from San Diego. And we're **** good too, so watch out!!!!! demonio.gif

Do you guys need me to bring up my table?

SD is coming up in force =)

Ok people. FYI any reprinted card that say basically says the same thing as the older version cards (ex. Bodyguard) are legal for this tourney. I don't think this will be an issue, but I wanted to put it out there for everyone to see!

Post questions here if you have them.

Time to bust out the old Westeros boxes then. Hedge Knights, lots of Hedge Knights!

Winter is coming suckas..... up the I5...... from San Diego???

We wouldn't know winter if it bit us in the face. But we're bringing it. Calicon is on!!!

FYI, we lost one so we're only 4 now. We should be there by 8pm

but with so many californians showing up, how in the world are you guys going to be able to give away enough second place prizes? lengua.gif

Please bring Winter with you. I am so over the Bay Area's Indian summer. I even happened to be in LA during that 115 degree record setting weekend :(

I like wear coats, maybe I should move to NYC.

In the People's Republic of California, everyone is a winner. We will share the second prizes.

So CaliCon has come and gone but not without some great memories and new friendships beginning. Our numbers were down this year (most likely due to our own scheduling issues and a little tourney in Europe called the Tourney of Stahleck being on the same weekend ) but as it happened we had 13 players each day. Here is a short breakdown of the results:

Melee - Top Table of 4

Johnny playing Greyjoy won 1st place

Luke playing Bara (Knights) tied for second

Joey playing Bara tired for second

Ryan playing Bara ended in 4th

Joust - Top 4

Cisco playing Stark (all 6 DotN agendas) went 4-0 in regulation

Jim playing Lannister (3 of the DotN agendas) went 3-1

Luke playing Lannister went 3-1

Johnny playing Targaryen went 3-1

Semi-finals

Cisco (4-0 in regulation) beat Johnny (3-1 in regulation)

Jim (3-1 in regulation) beat Luke (3-1 in regulation)

Finals

Jim beat Cisco

Johnny beat Luke

Jim (Laughing Tree) won 1st place in the CaliCon 2010 Joust Championship

Cisco (Letum) after going undefeated in regulation ended with 2nd place.

Johnny (Deathjester) got 3rd in joust which was good enough to secure CaliCon 2010 Overall Champion

Luke (Syd) ended with a 4th place finish.

Great job to all our participants and tourney organizers. I will be posting pictures and a more detailed report soon.

Seriously?!

~cha0s, I think the trashing of your house was the equivilant of what 87 people could have done. That counts for something right?

Thank you to all who attended, and major thanks to cha0s for his hospitality. Thank you for the time, food, and roof buddy.

Congrats to the finalists and winners, including John (Fieras) for winnning the Maester's Challenge.

I think across the board the level of competition had risen significantly in the past years in California. Part of that is a major tribute to all the new players who have come to the game. A lot of you are not only very good at Thrones, but you've made a lot of us veterans better as well. I love it.

Calicon was an incredible weekend! Thanks so much to Dan, Joey, and all the other roommates for hosting so many of us the whole weekend. The tournaments were awesome and I can't wait 'till next year.

I had an absolute blast at Calicon 2010. Major thanks to all who helped putting it on, especially to the incredible hospitality of cha0s and Joey. I had a great time meeting everyone and having some great Thrones games, even if I didnt win too much. As a new player, I feel like I learned a lot about the game from everyone. Proud owner of the pink Sansa award mat :)

Also, I hate the blue conveyer belts in Robo Rally.

Awesome job to Dan, Luke, Joey and Jonny and anyone else who helped with this event. As usual CaliCon was amazing fun and always a great time. Thank you to everyone who drove up, great to meet all the new players and see some old faces again :)

A good time as always. Thanks again to all the gracious hosts and excellent players.

I am going to try and bring dominion to my play group so we can get a bigger following there as well. We are going to have a thrones tournament of our own sometime in the near future, so I will let you guys know when we do it.

Was good to see those of you I knew, and good to meet those of you I didnt. I thoroughly enjoyed playing with and hanging out with all of you.

John from Chico.

CaliCon was awesome! Unlimited Thrones fun and newfound fellowship paired to make it a one-of-a-kind weekend. From the moment I arrived, I was warmly welcomed and found myself surrounded by awesome people. Everyone was class. Special thanks to Chaos/Syd for running the tourney, DeathJester for the Maester's Challenge, and Chaos and friends for the AMAZING hospitality. It was a real pleasure to meet everyone, and I'm definitely looking forward to coming again next time!
