Going to Dunwich

By Cardinal Nicodemus, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hello everybody. I am a lurker and an occasional poster here. A poster who bought Dunwich the other day and will probably run it for the weekend.

So, I have questions:

1. Will the game alter at all, or rather, will it be more difficult?

2. Is the terror level more likely to rise then in the base game?

3. After Dunwcih, which expansion would be good? (big and small box)

1. Yes. You'll have another five unstable locations, so no more mid-game slowdown waiting for your last few seals. And...meet Gate Bursts!

2. Yes. When monsters bail out of Dunwich, the Terror Level goes up, so that helps. The DH Mythos cards have a few surprises too...

3. Oh...just get them all and figure it out yourself! gui%C3%B1o.gif

Innsmouth has a better board mechanic than Dunwich, doubles your amount of Investigators and Ancient Ones, and adds Personal Stories (fun!), but it's much tougher (and MEANER), so be ready when you dive into the deep end.

Lurker at the Threshold adds great Mythos, great new Gate mechanics, and fun cards, but the Lurker Herald may or may not work for you.

The King in Yellow is hugely thematic, adds great cards, and its Herald is the most fun, but its Act mechanic doesn't mix too well with other expansions (dilution).

Kingsport adds more "everything" (like Dunwich), brings Epic Final Battle cards (BRILLIANT!!!), and adds a board/monster mechanic that is immune to dilution, but it has no unstable locations (might be boring to visit).

Curse of the Dark Pharaoh has marvelous theme and some nifty cards, but some of its mechanics wear out their welcome quickly.

Black Goat of the Woods has the most brutal Herald to date, some neat cards, and some new monsters, but its Cult mechanics, albeit very interesting, rarely make their presence felt at all.

That's far too quick'n'dirty to make a proper judgment. Do some more research about the forums...or just wait. More opinions will be along soon. gran_risa.gif

Actually, I did researched quite a bit (the madness grows quickly on), but am at a loss.

Anyway, I'll just run what I have and probably buy an expansion on a whim when I feel we need even more content demonio.gif. I am really liking the Innsmouth (and playing Dark Corners of the Earth also helps) for it's theme and general horror feel. Even starting to get into books. **** it, madness is already here.

To continue with the expansion talk, I am probably getting next Dark Curse of the Pharaoh, since KiY is not available at the moment at my game store. Still, there is whole Dunwich to explore, thanks for the input btw, seems it adds just what we wanted. Liking Kingsport but lack of unstable locations means it is not high on priorities list. More likely after Innsmouth and a small box.

Oh yeah, one last thing; Is 4 players optimal for Dunwich?

4 is good. My rule of thumb is to use one investigator for every third of the main board you have. Arkham + Dunwich = 4/3rds.

Of course, as you add more and more expansions, dilution makes Innsmouth and Dunwich (especially Dunwich) less relevant, so this rule of thumb tapers off if you don't use anti-dilution rules.

Great, thanks. Seems we are battling Glaaki or Cthulhu. Those are the ones we haven't faced still along with some others, but luck of the draw dictated one of those two. Hope terror level does (not) rise!

I am going to use this thread for saturday's game report.

Why did they add just two flamethrowers and molotov's? Need more fire :(

In conjunction with Dunwich, which small box expansion functions best thematically, or rather, which Ancient One?

Which small-box functions best thematically with Dunwich? Well, in the story The Lurker at the Threshold, the protagonist spends some time in Dunwich and lives pretty close by. So if theme is your motivation, get Lurker. Unfortunately, the Lurker expansion itself does not really have any mechanics or components that blend with Dunwich, but that's all I can tell you.

Black Goat might be a thematic consideration too, since the Cult meets in the wilderness.

As far as AOs go, there is one AO that ties thematically with both Dunwich AND Lurker: Yog-Sothoth! Yog, Dunwich, and the Lurker gates and herald together make for a particularly nasty game...
