First three games of AH

By Denim Demon, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I picked up the game awhile back and finally got my friends to play and give it a shot. Ive got to say, this game is a blast! Our first game we got demolished and was a good learning experience. After everyone left i reread the rules and found a few things we did wrong but overall i got most of the rules right. Then on Sunday we played 2 games.

Game 1: 5 players - we started out ok but some bad luck did us in, with our two strongest characters lost in time and space when Yig appears! Needless to say we got smoked!

Game 2: 3 players - All 3 of us had played in the other games and with a lot of luck( mythos gate locations kept coming up on locations that allready had a gate or were sealed). We closed all the gates on the board and had 5 gate trophies between us and only 6 tokens on the doom track!Right away we sealed 2 gates with elder signs- the previous 2 games we never even saw a elder sign from the unique deck!

Any advice on which Elder One us newbies should or shouldnt face or just leave it to fate??

Which characters are considered the best and worst?

I think Talisman and Heroclix (our standard friday/sunday games) might take a back seat to AH for awhile!!

That depends on who you ask. Everyone has a different answer. I'm curious as to what YOUR answer will be. gui%C3%B1o.gif

Best-ish: Mandy (Reroll Special Ability), Darrell (Encounter SA, Retainer), Joe (Clue Usage SA, .45), and Carolyn (Sanity Recovery SA)

Worst-ish: Vincent (Stamina Heal not as useful), Sister Mary (weak SA, and after Blessing is gone...?), Dexter (lack of Sanity for spellcasting)***, and Amanda (seldom-used SA, middling stats)

Rookies should look at Nyarlathotep and Ithaqua; Azathoth if you're REALLY new. But if you're willing to chance it, and not afraid of losing...in other words, you want to PLAY regardless of victory or defeat...by all means leave your Ancient Ones to fate. You want to feel the full wrath of the game? It's not actually Cthulhu...it's Yog-Sothoth. After 24 currently-available Ancient Ones, Yog is still in the top 10.

***Special Note: Once you've filled out your Spell Deck with a few Expansions, Dexter improves dramatically. His stats are actually pretty good, and his ability to locate the really awesome Spells can change games.
