Ser Arthur Dayne the Distracting

By gearhead, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

As we continue to learn AGoT, we played Friday night at my buddy’s house near Legends in KC.

We had 5 players so we had one of each house, except Stark for a change. This was also the 2nd run for my first Greyjoy design and a redesigned Baratheon deck. (I have all the cards and also build the decks trying to keep them all competitive.)

I ran my Martell House Dayne gold coin shuffling deck. The decks are still 45 cards as we get a handle on playing the game, though we included cards with shadows this time.

We always have a lot of fun playing, but I tend to win. With that in mind, I had at least 2 players determined to make sure someone other than I won!

I started early with Ser Arthur Dayne with Dawn. Supporting cast included Starfall Bannermen, Starfall Healers, Edric Dayne, the Starfall Army and such. I included Southron Vessel to test it out and it proved it’s worth on a Blockade! Turn (allowing me to pull gold from a character on that turn to spend) and giving tokens when I had spare to other characters.

But Arthur Dayne was the distraction MVP. Nothing says “fear me” like a power 10 character. 2x during the game, he was the target of Fishing Net. In the meantime, The Red Viper hit the table and I started to accumulate power.

Everyone knew that there were 2 Valar Morghulis’s on the table so people played with that in mind. (I had one in my deck and the Baratheon deck had one.) Saves flew around my characters until I got the 2nd copy of The Red Viper out and I was ready to Valar on round 7.

By this time, I was at 10 power, the Lannister deck was close with 9, Greyjoy had a few, Baratheon (which was performing poorly—need to do some more work with it…) had a few and so did Targaryen. (On turn 6 Balerion hit the table. I pointed out that he was immune to character abilities, so I had an un-knelt Viper who proceed to build up power, getting me 4 on a turn where most everyone else was knelt out.)

But…I figured that the Baratheon player would Valar (as he hadn’t yet either) so I dropped Breaking of Oaths on turn 7. He did Valar, but a Power of the Blood hit the table in anticipation of it and my Viper was protected.

Then the Targaryen player made a HUGE mistake. He took the Master of Laws. I took the Master of Whispers. With all the dead piles full and no one really seeing the threat. 2 breaking of oaths inspired Viper intrigue blitzes later, I was sitting on 16 power and a win. (The Targ player had NO intrigue blockers so—Viper unblocked 1 power, renown 1 power, opposing 1 power x2)

Martell wins again!

Some interesting notes about the game. I really like the gold shuffling of Southron Vessel. But I’m not sure of how well it would do in a joust. Melee seems perfect for it.

The Greyjoy player, who’d seen how nasty The Red Viper was, still felt that the big bad Arthur Dayne was more of a threat so he netted him a 2nd time on the 6th turn rather than Vipey-man. (I’d removed the first net on a Porridge Flys turn…)

Baratheon still needs work…just isn’t coming out the way I want it to. It was a knight heavy renown deck, but couldn’t really get started.

I played light on the events and attachments. I only used “He Calls it Thinking” and “Burning in the Sand” for events and “Taste for Blood” and “Dawn” for attachments.

Starfall and Starfall Bannerman is a nice combo. Does the bonus from multiple Starfall Bannermen stack? The House Dayne Deck has the potential to play well at 60 I hope.

And, was I right? The Red Viper ignores the kneel ability of Balerion?

Gearhead, Thanks for the fun report!

I still hope to make it up to KC sometime soon! I have some family that lives in Blue Springs, so I could stay with them over the weekend. Do you guys get together on any specific day each month?

Yes, you are correct.

Great report.

Nice mini-report indeed. However, the Core Set Rulebook states:

"If you win a challenge against a player who chose a title that your title opposes, you claim 1 power for your House in addition to any other power you might claim for winning that challenge. You cannot claim more than one power per round in this manner."

Would that still equal 5 power then? 2x for unopposed, 2x for renown and 1x for the opposing title?

Yes, you still got that five power to win. gui%C3%B1o.gif

I would like to point out that Viper should of died when the 2nd Valar hit, as the Power of Blood is not a 'when revealed' effect.
When revealed's happen first.

This does raise an interesting question: What happens when 2 Valars go off in the same round? Had I chosen Valar instead of Breaking of Oaths what would've or could've happened that round with Power of the Blood going off too?

3 possible scenarios: how do they play out?

1) Power of the Blood goes off first, then the 2 Valars

2) The 2 Valars go off, then Power of the Blood

3) Valar, Power of the Blood, Valar

Let's say there is one noble character this affects...which scenarios does he survive (if any) and which ones doesn't he? No other saves, just Power of the Blood alongside 2 Valars....

Power of blood would save him from both as both Valars would go off after the 1 power of blood. Its continuous so it always goes off first.

Yeah, all three scenarios play out exactly the same -- noble characters won't be killed because they cannot be killed. You're confusing how plots are actually revealed. All plots are considered to be revealed the instant they are played, revealed, "flipped" over from your plot deck, whatever you want to call it. The first player doesn't choose which plots are revealed first, but rather chooses the order in which "when revealed" effects resolve. PoB's effect is constant effect and therefore takes effect the instant it is played, revealed, etc. So when Valar's effect is chosen to go off, noble characters won't be killed because they cannot be killed due to PoB.

Here is the FAQ entry on this matter:

(2.2) Plot Effect Resolution
Continuous or constant plot effects take effect immediately and simultaneously, as soon as the plot cards are revealed. The first player determines the order in which all "when revealed" plot effects are resolved. "When revealed" plot effects are essentially self-referential passive effects that initiate in response to the revealing of the plot card with the "when revealed" effect. They are resolved (in the order determined by the first player) during step 4 of the action window in which the plot card was revealed. All "when revealed" plot effects must resolve before any other passive effects initiated by the revealing of a plot card(s) are resolved.

Thanks for clarifying. I wasn't understanding the plot resolution correctly.
