Next cycle?

By Hellfury, in CoC General Discussion

About the time Dreamlands first AP was released, we had news of the next cycle which is Yuggoth contract.

Its about midway through Yuggoth and no word about the next cycle. I am kinda wondering why the hush and what it may mean. Perhaps a large expansion will be next? Possible since even W:I has two as of Gencon.

What do the folks here think about why what is coming next in the pipeline is so hush hush?

Heh, not to beat the dead horse, but maybe the end of this cycle will be a good time to re-print the older packs.

And, since one is allowed to dream, maybe they can even expand on the Madness and Horror cycle, in order to get more Polar events (am I the only one who likes the idea of blizzards and Aurora Borealis?), together with some Day/Night. So far, all the sub-mechanics have yet to have substancial backbone for a deck to be properly built around them. Of course, as the game expands, especially the Day/Night will become more relevant.

Still, the most likely situation is a bigger expansion, à la Secrets of Arkham. It'll be interesting to see if those kind of big phat packs will come with 3 copies of each card - that would ammount to 150 cards, to offer 50 new cards again. That would mean a 50% increase in size, and I wonder how the prices will turn out with that change.

I doubt we'll see a new 'deluxe' expansion so shortly after Secrets of Arkham. I'd expect one about a year from now at the earliest.

When I look at this list:

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_upcoming.asp

I see what I interpret as a reprint of Mountains of Madness and Ancient Horrors... Now, there is no date, so maybe I am just being a naive fool: "It's on there so it must be coming!" There isn't really a date, but does this mean that ultimately, one day, there will be the reprints people have been asking for? If so, then maybe the post-Yuggoth activity will be a massive re-print party?

Someone let me know if I am complete misinterpreting what that list means.

I understand that FFG plans to reprint the currently out-of-print asylum packs. And they don't know exactly when, but it is in the pipeline.

Considering the number of new games that will be released in the immediate future including the Lord of the Rings CCG, I wouldn't be surprised if the next release for CoC was delayed.

I find that this is likely. Hopefully whatever comes later wont be too delayed. The '2 cycles per year' is starting to look to be just a tad over 1 cycle per year. Once revenue from the newer games have rolled in this winter season, I would bank on the older AP being reprinted.

For newer cycles I kind of hope that the dreamlands get revisited somehow at some point as that is a large part of the background that could use more than 120 cards to cover. A "New Aeons" or "Delta Green" type of expansion through a time rift would be rather fun to explore. Perhaps its time to visit the Black Pharaoh? Or perhaps explore the Yithian side of things in Australia?

I'd still like to see AP's that aren't built around a created cycle specific story but more based on the actual stories of HPL and co. Examples such as:

Mansions of Madness cycle: The Lurking Fear, The Rats in the Walls, The Unnamable and Dreams in the Witch House.

Weird Science cycle: Herbert West: Reanimator, Cool Air, and The Shadow Out of Time.

Xothic Legend cycle: All the Xothic stuff by Lin Carter.

Mythos Legends cycle: The Festival, Pickman's Modal, Horror at Red Hook and The Thing on the Doorstep.

And so on. Let's see some sets that give us more characters, locations, artifacts and what have you from HPL and chums' works.

I really like the idea of devoting an entire Asylum pack to maybe six of Lovecraft's stories. Or maybe a deluxe expansion doing the same thing. I was really happy when Denizens of Dunwich came out, but it was a short-lived Asylum Pack.

The Big Show has got it right. Classic stories are preferable. Conversely, the LCG AP cycle dynamic will likely continue to employ Nate French's episodic stories. That means more new characters and some old mixed in. It's a balance, though. Hard to choose Broken Glasses over Splendid Cathuria.

Exactly. While I'm happy with what Nate is doing with the game, it means that we won't see the specifics of HPL's creations in the AP's and I think that is a real shame. A cycle doesn't have to be a story arc it can be themed.

I kinda wish they would do more thematic stuff as well.

I tried to build a polar themed deck but really all it is, is dogs doing the majority of the work while everything else tries hard to function while remaining inside the theme. Great attempt and for the most part works all right but Asylum packs such as dunwich denizens makes me wish I didnt miss that era of the game.

I enjoy the story arcs that French makes, but I would really like to see perhaps the deluxe expansions cater to a certain theme and stick to it. Secrets of Arkham is great for building up the card pool I guess, but I pine for more specific overall themes I have become accustomed to after many years of reading Lovecraft and his protégés.

1 AP is simply not enough to satisfy the hunger of a particular theme.

I wouldnt be suprised if another expansion came out sooner. Warhammer:Invasion has just released a second expansion, and their pack releases are similar to CoC....of course, the new LoTR game may put a strain on resources devoted for this game (especially if it becomes a big hit).

I really like the HP Lovecraft story themed Pack idea. I always find myself looking up characters from CoC, to see if they are in actual stories anyway.
