Newb looking for some advice...

By kamacausey, in CoC General Discussion

Hello everyone,

Ever since my first game of Arkham Horror about a month ago I have kinda been obsessed with everything cthulhu and h.p. lovecraft. I cant get enough of it. Whether its the board game, h.p. lovecrafts short stories, learning about the card game, etc... I just cant seem to get enough. I play a lot of card games and after seeing the online tutorial for coc I have to say it looks very interesting. The main card game I play is world of wardcraft and the resource system is a lot like that of coc so that intrigued me right off. I know all about having to make tough decisions because of having to row cards facedown in your hand for resources. I am looking to possibly get into this card game and I was just looking for tips, ideas, help, etc.. you guys might think a newb like myself should know about. There is a core set of the game(i think its the core set) at our local shop and I was thinking about picking it up to learn how to play. If I am genuinely interested after picking up the core what asylum packs should I look into getting first?

Thanks in advance,

-Kama

Welcome! Pick up that core. Download the deckbuilder and the images.

I agree with Johnny. Pick up the core and try out the game. Download the Deckbuilder and look through the cards. You will develop strategies early and find factions that you like, then you can hone your own purchase list of APs. I feel the need to own 3 of each card, some others don't. Before I would suggest that you get more APs, I'd suggest you get a second and third core set. You'll find that most decks run a large percentage of core set cards.

Too keep costs down, buy a core set each with a friend and swap between you, to get 2-3 cards of the ones you want of the factions.

Then get Secrets of Arkham, this will keep you going for a while. And give you a nice range of cards as a new player..

As for the Ap's, there is ltd stock around of the first cycle, mainly the last 3 packs, then the dreamlands cycle is in good supply (at the moment).

But maybe just dive staright into the Yuggoth cycle where you get 3 of each card, if funds are tight...

After reading the rulebook I don't recall reading anything about a mulligan or sidedeck rule? Do these exist in this game? Also, in competitive play is it based off of best of 1 games or best of 3?

Thanks,

-Kama

Also, is there a database available that I can go to to look at all the cards currently in circulation?

Thanks,

-Kama

Regarding your database question: What are you looking for that you cannot see in the Deckbuilder?

Check out the support page for CoC. The information you seek should be there in the current FAQ document. I think there's a separate document detailing tournament rules.

What support page? Where's the deckbuilder? Where can I find the current FAQ document?

The support page, which contains a link to the FAQ and other resources is here:

Welcome kamacausey!

Check out the Video Tutorial on the 'Edge Minisite' if you haven't already!

Yes, start with a Core Set and then go from there. I believe that there is still

a downloadable demo deck somewhere which may be useful to get friends going.

There is no official FFG deckbuilder.

Ok, then where is this deckbuilder everyone is talking about?

Ok I have located and downloaded the deckbuilder but I am having some difficulties seeing the card images. All that is popping up is text. Anyone know why that may be?

Thanks,

There is a thread nyarlazorbec runs on the boards. He is the master, the programmer. That is the place to seek his guidance.

Unzip the image files into the CORRECT FOLDERS. If you see only one card, a place marker, you didn't do it.

I am jealous that you are about to discover the powerful deckbuilder for the first time. It is a revelation.

Hi everyone. I too am a new player to this game (my friend introduced me to it just last week) - and these forums (just signed up today !) - but I had some years of experience with MTG back in high school (seems like a long time ago now !) and quickly got the basics and some of the initial strategy ideas down in the handful of games I played the past few days. I didn't have any cards of my own, naturally, but I've ordered a bunch of the Asylum Packs and,of course, the Core Game box - and they should be arriving in a few days.

Anyways, since this is a "newb-help" thread to begin with, I thought I could slide in a quick ULTRA-newbish question re: the game and hope the vets could easily answer. My friend (who himself had only played the game with one other guy a few months ago - and not since then to any length) - who was teaching me about the game, basically explained that when you start the game and assign Resources from the 8-cards you draw in the starting hand, that you can put 1-Resource/Card under each Domain....OR ....can divide them up in any combination you wanted. So, as he had been playing it, you could put ALL 3 of your chosen cards to be Resources - under ONE single domain...then proceed with play from there (first turn person could go - drawing only 1-card, then place a 4th card under a Domain - potentially having 4-cards under 1-domain on their half of Turn-1....and enabling you to throw out things like Ravager from the Deep immediately.

In hindsight, and after reading some comments of players here - and watching some demo-games on YouTube....I'm getting the idea that this is not the way we should be doing it. It seems like (if played this way) some VERY strong cards and combos are able to get out very early in the game.

Are we actually supposed to only put ONE card/resource under each of the 3-starting domains...then proceed from there ? - or can you actually attach ALL 3 of them to one single domain, and produce a Turn-2 Dagon (etc) ?

Thanks for any info you guys can provide - and I am happy to be a part of these Forums, and in the presence of such knowledgeable and (from what I've read the last few days) - genuinely thoughtful and helpful members !

Your intuition has lead you to the correct answer. You must put exactly one card under each domain during the Setup phase. If you check out the official rules, they explain the 5 steps of the Setup phase. The fifth one reads:

Each player takes the remaining three cards from his setup hand and attaches one, faceup and upside down, to each of his three domains. The card bottom and resource icon should be all that is visible above the domain card. The attached cards are now considered resources. (Each player may look at his opponent’s resources if he wants to.)

You will note that every domain gets exactly one card (no more, no less).

Welcome to the site and game. I think you would get your card pool off to a great start if you pick up the core set (or two copies) and get Secrets of Arkham expansion. Then start with the current Asylum Pack cycle, and work backwards from there as Asylum Packs become available to you. The core set is actually a good start because Its got a solid base of cards and at least one of each major beastie in the game.

Thanks for your welcome and info on my question, guys. I was pretty sure something odd was going on when we were throwing out 3 and 4 cost cards with powerful abilities on Turn-1 or 2 ! Basically...if you start with 3 Resources (as we had been playing those few test/intro games), then the guy who went first could pop a 4th resource down on the same domain, and produce Y'Golonac (IIRC he costs 4) or some other powerful things before his opponent has even gotten to go. I'm glad to see we have been doing things wrong and will let my buddy know when I see him later today at work.

In his defense, he had gotten the game on a whim while in another state some months ago for job training and has probably played no more than...15 or 20 games (my estimate) TOTAL (including the 4 or 5 with me the past weekend) - and those initial games he played were with another work-friend who he met at the training location, so he himself has never played with any "veterans" of the LCG. I

For myself, I really enjoy the basic mechanics and haven't played a tactical card game like this since MTG (and one could argue about how tactical MTG had gotten by the time I'd gotten out of it). As for your advice on what to get to start, I have a bunch of things ordered already (through Ebay and a local gaming store). Here's what is on its way:

- CoC Core Game Box x1

- Secrets of Arkham x1

- (Dreamlands) - Twilight Horror x2, In Memory of Day x1, In the Dread of Night x2, The Search for the Silver Key x2, Sleep of the Dead x2, JourneyKad x2

- (The Yuggoth Contract) - Whispers in the Dark x1, Murmurs of Evil x1, The Spoken Covenant x1

- Placed Order at Store but unknown when they will arrive: (Summons of the Deep) - 1 of each Asylum Pack in this cycle

So that seems like a good start for me. I've got my eye on another Core Set (per your advice) as I see what you mean (looking through some of the cards in there) about many good ones being in that initial offering.

I also would love to pick up any Asylum Packs people have for the At The Mountains of Madness and Ancient Horrors (in particular !) - and posted as much on the "Trading" sub-Forum, if anyone reading this has some and is agreeable to selling some of them !

I immediately liked the concept of Hastur and the notion of driving foes insane, and winning that way. I think the mechanics of the game seem innovative in that each Faction has a certain "theme" to its playstyle, and you are free to play singular factions (though most decks I've seen seem to be 2-3 factions, in practice) - or modify them with bits and pieces of other Factions to cover various game-needs like "Character Destruction/Damage" or "Support or Attachment removal" or "Card Draw // Discard on Opponents" - etc. It seems well done all around.
