Which expansion pack to buy?

By Undreren, in 4. AGoT Deck Construction

Me and my girlfriend bought the Core Set, and we really fell in love with the game right away.

Now we wish to expand our collection of cards to make new decks.

She wishes to play a Stark deck with heavy emphasis on direwolves for attaining military dominance with lots of deadly characters.

I wanted to buy her an expansion pack that suited her needs. Mind you, we are going to buy the core set a second time.

I on the other hand want to play targaryan, kind of like the core deck, but with more burn effects and characters that are able to save themselves through character effects.

So, which exansion for her, and which for me?

Lords of Winter for her. There is no Targaryen deluxe expansion yet, so you must search cards among the chapter packs. Click link in my signture to find out what cards you can get in which pack/box. BTW you will need 3 x Core Set (there are some Targaryen "must have" cards e.g Flame Kissed)

Forgot to add: write str%0 as a search phrase in "Ability like" field (also uncheck "Hide Plots" option). This way you can quickly find Targaryen stuff.

Ok, thanks.

I know that we have to buy the core 3 times, but we are only going to buy it for the second time until further notice.

Seems like I have to get a lot of different packs for this deck. Oh well ;)

I just today got my second core set and have been getting along okay without it, but now that I have it I had easier time building my Direwolf and Tully decks than with just the one and the LoW box and deck lists. Really I think two of any of the core sets is pretty much enough. I don't forsee me getting a third unless someone wants to split one maybe.

For Targaryen one pack I recommend just for sheer awesomeness is the Retun of the Others, last pack in the Defenders of the North Expansion, as you get Balerion the Black in it. http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=1436

For her one pack I would recommend, the first from Defenders of the North, is Wolves of the North pack, in it you get Wolves of the North a Direwolf card, 6 strength, Deadly. And you will like the Khal Drogo in it.

You are absolutely right. I MUST own that card. At least for the Power theft through challenges :D

There are some tournament level targ and stark decks listed here to check out for ideas of what cards you might want.

I agree that "Lords of Winter" is perfect for her. I would also recommend the " Sacred Bonds " chapter pack from "A Clash of Arms," specifically for the "Feral Pack" . If she likes deadly... well, she'll have more than she can possibly use.

Sacred Bonds also contains some helpful cards for each house: the "Herald" cards which allow you to search your deck for characters, and the "To Be..." events (which are pretty powerful), and three sets of dual-house characters with dual-house keywords. It you're running burn and strength lowering effects, having a character with Intimidate could be pretty cool.

Mind you, we are going to buy the core set a second time.

There's no rush to get a third set. If you're playing casually, x2 copies of a given event or attachment is plenty; more diversity tends to be more fun.

You might consider picking up Song of Summer, Winds of WInter, Change of Seasons to give you and your lady the chance to run Winter Stark against Summer Targaryen.

Good lord I despise this forum software. Look for my comments above, in the quote box. I give up.
