New hardcover books vs. new boxes

By Steel Rabbit, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Hey everyone.

The three hardcover books that have been announced, that allow you to play WFRP3 without the counters and components, seem to be paired along with boxes that contain cards and counters and all the regular stuff that we've come to expect from WFRP3. I'm specifically talking about the Creature Guide and Creature Vault; the Player's Guide and Vault; and the Game Master's Guide and Vault.

My question is: If I'm happy with my games of WFRP3 with counters, and cards, and all the new component-y goodness we've seen so far, is there anything in the Guides that would interest me, or should I just stick with the Vaults? So far I've been buying every supplement for WFRP3 and will gladly continue to, but if the Guides contain a version of WFRP3 that don't use the myriad of components I've collected so far, I don't think they're really for me (though my game group might go for something like that)

Thanks!

Well, I'm actually thinking about buying just the books and leaving the Vaults for later or never (not Creature's, that one I'll get). That is because what the Vaults will be giving I already own with the Core Box. It would be nice to have more components to enjoy, but I'm not sure if I'm going to use all of them so much, it is more money to spend and every new box brings some other components, so I think I'll be ok without the Vaults.

But I'll get the books. I just like the idea of having more organized material that explains Warhammer System. And explains it better, if we take Jay seriously (more exemples and updated explanations).

I think it will help preparing between sessions, as fast reference on sessions, and to take some reading material with me where I go without having to take the whole box to check the cards and stuff that are not on the Core Boxe's thin books.

I think the creatures book will be useful but the others you can do without if you have the coreset. I think Jay even says so in the Vicious seminar. The creature book has some new stuff though.

The other HC books are not only for using with the Lite version of the game though. it will contain all the rules from the core set and gamemaster book respectively as well as some 'way of playing the game without the counters'.

Yes, Jay at this years seminar said that when You have the core set then You don't need not Players Guide& Players Vault not GM Guide & GM Vault. Becouse there is just the same materials in the core set, plus some more example and a little Lite version of play if You wuold like to use it . And if You listened carefully You would heart that Jay said that in The Palyers Vault & GM Vault you will get only stuff from the core set - so there will be no components from Gathering Strom or Winds of Magic, not even from Signs of Faith. So there will be no Blessing cards for all faiths or Spells for all orders.

I know I will buy it all, but if You don't have enough maney then I would recomend to buy first Creatures Guide & Creatures Vault. And those GM and Players books with boxes You can buy later in any order.

The only real reason you'd want to Player's Guide or the GM Guide is as a handy reference to have while at the table or when preparing games. Otherwise no, you can skip them.

The Creature's Guide and Vault will have a lot of new material, so you'll probably want one or both of those.

That's all true. New things will be only in Creatures Guide and Creatures Vault. But still I will buy all of those new Guides & Vaults. I think those will be very usefull for me not only durning a session but in planing ones.

I usually don't like having to go through a lot of cards and components during next session planning, so I think I will be happy with the hardcover books.

Just remember, the usefulness of the hardcover books as handy planning references starts to go down the minute you acquire the next supplement as new rules, cards, etc. will be introduced and the PG/GMG will no longer be the one-book reference for everything.

hm... sadly, that seems a precise argument...

Actually, the GMG has consolidated tables for criticals, as well as the rules (and tables) for Corruption and Disease. So, it *could* be useful for GMs that haven't bought WoM and SoF.

Otherwise, yeah, the GMG and PG are mostly useful for easier reference if you've already got the core set.

Hmm... Thanks for the responses everyone, though I must admit I'm still not very clear on the new books. I'll watch the presentation, and wait for the books to arrive in my shop I guess. I just hope they're not shrink-wrapped.

There is a greater chance I would pick up a book over a deck of cards. So it has caught my eye.
