Really just because I wanted to play the Easter Knight...

By f7eleven, in Warhammer Invasion Deck Building

After seeing the 3rd place deck from Worlds (the Empire based Thrower deck) I wanted to try to tighten it up from it's 59 cards. But then I'd been wanting to try out the new Easter Knight too, so I kind of mashed them together and the deck turned out pretty decent. I'm still testing it, but Wilhelm is a beast! And I like how Electors is actually playable on its own against Thrower and Dwarves.

Here's my decklist.

3 Huntsmen
3 Pistoliers
3 Free Company
3 Gryphon Legionnaire
1 Thyrus Gorman
2 Troll Slayers
1 Zealot Hunter
3 Wilhelm of the Osterknacht

3 Innovation
3 Order in Chaos
3 Will of the Electors
1 Burn It Down
3 Demolition!
1 Master Rune of Spite
3 Judgement of Verena

3 Warpstone Excavation
3 Contested Village
3 Derricksburg Forge
1 Dwarf/Empire Alliance
3 Mining Tunnels
2 Shrine to Taal

I'd forgotten how much fun Pistoliers are! And Wilhelm is even better than I had thought he'd be. Moving units with zone specific abilities is REALLY fun!

In the limited testing so far I've been pleasantly surprised. It held it's own against DarkElf/Skaven, moving Vile Sorcerers, Clan Moulder Elites and Scouts to the Kingdom and decimating his draw with Demolition.

Against Thrower I was able to keep him off resources, but because he could still draw (and I once elected to take part in his Reap) he only needed the 2 or 4 for the Fog and I decked myself. So it may need some heavier hitters to speed up the clock when you've got the resources under control. We've of course considered Hellblaster Volley Gun, but I don't like the card advantage given up, nor making more of my units susceptible to Spite. Hopefully Silent Forge can provide something beefier for Empire.... why can't EMPIRE get a Dragon! :(

Dammit! I knew that!

-1 Shrine to Tall
-1 Order in Chaos
-1 Will of the Electors

+3 Hellblaster Volley Gun

Wow, it's crazy how many cards are started to look the same in any Order-based deck these days. Crazy and disappointing. :(

I'm assuming you don't have March of the Damned yet, but even so I would recommend proxying up some Rodrik's Raiders - they seem like a natural fit in this deck, as focused as you are on resource denial.

We've tested something very similar vs. the usual suspects and our conclusion was it wasn't quite there yet, but maybe Raiders will be a decent enough upgrade in card quality to get a bit closer. The main issue was a lack of critical mass for support disruption such that you might sometimes keep them on lockdown but often they only needed 1 turn without disruption to start going off and building up an advantage from which you can't come back. Also, with the exception of Raiders (which is why I'm so excited about those guys) your resource denial plan is rarely going to let you simultaneously put enough pressure on them to win before they recover.

I think the deck needs Raiders plus a Man-O-War type unit; once Empire gets that I start to look at a tempo/resource denial (Ponza) deck as being a more viable choice.

Card suggestion for the man-o-war-esque unit I'm talking about:

  • Sigmar's Vanguard: Empire unit, 2EEE, 1 power 2 health. Battlefield only. You may play this unit from your hand at any time you could play an action (paying all costs). Action: When Sigmar's Vanguard comes into play, return target unit to its owner's hand.

The only problem is that the Raiders are a bit of a nonbo with the Judgement suite. They are really good though and I think a rack of Raiders along with Demolitions gives you at least a fighting chance against Thrower.

I've combed through the spoiler for March... Raiders and the two 2-cost Elf supports seem to be the best three cards. I'll see if my group wants to proxy some MotD cards, as I'm thinking the same as you in regards to a Ponza-ish deck type.

I also think your Man-o-war is a resource undercosted, unless you remove Flash.

The Judgement suite isn't in love with Raiders, so maybe you swap those 5 slots for more Alliances and Spites.
