Kingsport vs. King & Lurker

By Mylo2, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

The poorer part of my judgement is convincing me to go blow some cash on some more Arkham madness

Now, I've got Innsmouth and Dunwich, I've been wary of other expansions because the small boxes seem to drown out what might be goin on in Innsmouth and Dunwich while Kingsport... well, the only parts of Kingsport I'm really interested in are the new AO's, items, monsters and epic battles (the board itself looks boring, some of the new characters are silly, and I don't like the allies included)

But, I'ma do it anyway. So...

Kingsport or King in Yellow +Lurker at the threshold?

Kingsport! It's worth it for the Epic Battle cards, Ancient Ones, characters and monsters alone!

Get Kingsport, for Solan's reasons and for your assumptions. King in Yellow and Lurker are worth getting at some point, but bear in mind that King in Yellow has most of the cool stuff in that pairing. Together they certainly are not worth what Kingsport is worth alone, even if you don't use the board all the time.

I'm gonna third all that: Kingsport components are worth more than Lurker and King in Yellow combined. Plus, I actually enjoy the board from time to time.

I think the KingsPort expansion adds a lot of different mechanics and cards. I like the Heralds and Guardians. Lots of aguatic monsters plus the Epic and Ancient one plot cards add variety. I think the Rifts add another flavor to the game. It also seems like the OW cards do much more to you. And to me the Eihort Monster with his brood tokens are really different. I have not played him yet and am not looking forward to it.

Eihort's probably the easiest of the Kingsport lot, by a bunch. Atlach and Yibb scare me much more.

Atlach is definitely the one to be scared of. Last weekend I played Atlach and managed to get up to 8 allies for my four investigators (4 of them from passing the Mistrust rumor for the first time ever, the rest from purchases at Ma's). It came to final combat (no surprise) and I thought to myself: I just might make it - even with Epic battle and KW clue per seal rule (I had three elder signs on the board). Foolish mortal - the first round of combat had me draw a sinister plot ... which turned out to be "discard all allies in play!". sorpresa.gif

Needless to say, final combat was quick and Atlach notched up another win.

Reluctantly I say Kingsport. Lurker's got some great components though.

What is this either-or crap?

Get them all.

Probably a budget thing, as Mylo's post seems to imply. One big expansion is about the same price as two small expansions. Of course I'd say to get them all, but sometimes it's not an immediate option.

Budget was indeed the issue...

As it happened, King in Yellow was sold out and I also remembered I wanted to pick up some paints for some warmachine miniatures I have (and the shop had the faction colour box in,). Thus I ended up picking up Lurker. Playing it now and digging it thoroughly but I am seeing the limits of the herald based small expansions compared to what Kingsport box adds. Oh well...
