Out of Cards

By Mighty Jim 83, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Just played my first few games, and have a pretty straightforward question-

What happens if you run out of cards?

does the game just run on until your characters have all been killed (fairly soon as I was playing against Stark with a core set plot deck) and you lose lots of uncontested challenges?

How about if you both run out of cards?

Nothing happens. You keep on playing but cannot draw any more cards unless you use CS Barristan Selmy's ability or something like that.

The game would eventually resolve if both of you ran out of cards and characters as gold counts towards getting power for Dominance. Unless you are running something like Siege of Winterfell. Then you're just out of luck lengua.gif

It never happens anyway. happy.gif

True enough. I've heard of it happening once in a Martell vs. Martell (or Lannister) game in one of the OCTGN tournaments. I believe they still had cards in hand and characters in play though. They were decked out, but that's it.

In the old CCG version, you could run out of cards when you start using (well... abusing) the effects that attach cards from your deck face-down onto a card in play (typically a character). I haven't explored all the chapter packs for the new LCG version, but from the little I know, I haven't seen a similar effect in the LCG.

... I wonder if FFG decided that (mostly Martell) mechanic was kinda broken.

... but I find it interesting enough that I might start hunting down some more CCG cards.

There were a couple of combos that turned the face-down mechanic into a sort of insane delayed-draw, and there is now a rule in the FAQ preventing that, but mostly, it was a mechanic that limited rather than expanded most decks. Some of the "search and attach" mechanics we see today (Abandoned Forge, for instance) and event-turned-character tokens (the Reinforcements) are evolved forms of the face-down mechanic.

I'm sure it won't once we know what we're doing. However with the core set decks (only 40-odd cards each), and my Lannisters drawing lots of extra cards it did.
