Multiplayer Review?

By baggymacaw, in Tannhauser

I've been reading reviews today, and have determined that Tannhauser is the game for me. But having said that, I must say that I've noticed that not a single review described a game that had more than two players. Most of the reviewers bought the game on a shoe-string, rushed home with it to their wife, and forced her into playing it. After a smoke, they wrote the review, and I must said, it was positive.

In the forums, there are only three posts that speak of having difficulty playing with more than two or three players. Has anyone found the game playable with up to 10 people? Should I dream of bringing in my highschool reunion buddies for a schnitzle and tannhauser night?

Or, should I simply be happy forcing my wife to play it in a mano y hermano match. I must confess, I don't like that, she usually kicks the crap out of me when I play a game with her.

I've never played it with more than 3 people but I can tell you it's not a beer and pretzels game. It's closer to a PVP role playing game. In fact I think it missed it's calling in that regard because it wouldn't take much to make a RP game out of it. That said I see no reason you couldn't play with more players but there would be a bit of down time if you had alot of people.

I've only played once with three, 2 reich, 1 (me) the allies. I thought it played just fine and kind of reminded me of a 3 player Last Night On Earth session. I'm getting Novgorod in a trade and I'm hoping to set up a 2 board 3 player game for my group with like a 10 turn limit and points for killing other models, maybe an objective in the middle of the map or something. I'm still just brainstorming it.

Also, I would not recommend a 10 player game. You could try, but I imagine that 8 or 9 people would be bored most of the time. We tried large teams for Duel of Ages and it didn't work.

Playing with more than two players require some adjustments to th gameplay to avoid that the board end up overpopulated. I also think that a 4 player game would be the maximum number of participants and you have to play with a reduced team (but with some reinforcements).

I was looking for a topic about playing Tannhäuser with more than two people, and this was only I could find with a bit research.

So as I liked to hear opinions about different amount of players, I brought this one up.

Truth is, that I actually bought the game partially becouse it was promising 2-10 players, as I like gaming to be more social experience. And actually, I haven't yet tried it out as an 2-player game.

I introduced Tannhäuser to group of friends last week, and we had 6 players -all new to the game. We used few changes, most notably that we just simply dropped the troopers. Each player acted with single character, and one was nominated as team general (to allocate command point and to throw the die when it was for whole team). An I have to say, it was great experience! And people got very fond of the game.

With six players, the game had nice pacing, as no-one had more than one character to use. Also it gave a nice addition to "group tactics", as you had to actually talk about your options with a real team. How to use your CP's, how to advance, etc., so the team that worked better to achieve a common goal, won in the end.

I thought about using troops to "re-introduce" players to the game in case their character died very early in a multiplayer game.

I could imagine, that T would work quite nicely with 4 players, with each using 1-2 characters and 2-3 troopers. Or if you feel like it, could mess the concept a bit with larger teams.

So the game works well up to six players, and I would like to hear thoughts and most preferably some experiences with different amount of gamers around the table.

From my experience the only "problem" with a 3+ players games with regular 5 man teams is that the boards is crowded very fast.

Well you dont go giving each person a full 5 mini squad to lead- that would take ages to finish :)

Usually we play tannhauser in 4 with two factions, each faction having 2 players.

Each player gets 2 heroes and one trooper, or 2 heroes or just 1 hero and one trooper if we want a shorter game and this kind of setup has proven to be great fun so far :)

That's right, playing with a smaller squad is a good solution to play with more than two players. Have you tried playing with a smaller Matriarchy squad ?

A game I would like to try is this:

This is a suggested team roseter, but there still more figures to use, and more on the way.

Four Players, 2 vs. 2

Team 1:

Player 1

MacNeal

Ramirez

Commando Alpha

Player 2

Hoax

Brown

Commando Delta

Team 2:

Player 3

Heizinger

Zermann

Stosstruppen

Player 4

Yula

Eva

Schocktruppen

Yes, we almost always use the matriarchy team as one of the friends playing regularly is a girl and she loves kicking our buts with Zorkas awakening :)

So she is playing Zorka and 4 voivodes while her team-mate is using the other 3 matriarchy heroes as support. So we have 4 heroes and 2 troops per faction on the board and it doesnt feel crowded at all.

The game is at its best with two players.
